Go Now
Banks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We've already said good bye
Since you've got to go, oh you'd better go now
Go now go now
Before you see me cry
I want you to tell me just
What you intend to do now
'cause how many times do I have to tell you
Darlin', darlin' I'm still in love with you now

We've already said so long
I don't want to see you go
Oh you had better go now
Go now go now
Don't you even try
Tellin' me that you really don't
Want it to end this way
'Cause darlin', darlin' can't you see
I want you to stay, yeah

Since you gotta go
Oh, you'd better go now
Go now, go now, go now
Before you see me cry
I don't want you to tell me just what you intend to do now

'Cause how many times do I have to tell you, darlin' darlin'
I'm still in love, still in love with you now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Banks Bessie's song Go Now express an urgent plea to a departing lover, imploring them to leave immediately rather than lingering and causing more pain. The repetition of the phrase "go now" underscores the importance of the message and emphasizes the singer's vulnerability and emotional state. The lyrics suggest that the relationship has already ended, but the singer is still in love with their partner and struggling to come to terms with the separation.

The repeated use of the word "darling" throughout the lyrics reinforces the emotional bond between the two lovers, and the repetition of the phrase "I'm still in love with you now" serves as a reminder of the depth of the singer's feelings. Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of desperation and heartache, as the singer tries to come to terms with the end of the relationship while still holding onto hope for reconciliation.

Can't believe it took me almost fifty years to learn that the Moodys were not the original artists to perform this terrific ballad. Love it.

@RAinteractive

Same here - and I love this version. I used to sit on the floor by the radio trying to tune in to hear it in '65 by The Moody Blues. Bessie's version is wonderful.

I always thought this song shouldn't have been sung by a white boy from Britain.... I like this version way better

@syn707

I just read this too. I’m 70, never knew this was the original . Rip Denny

The version, by The Moody Blues, is the only one that I had ever heard, until today. This one is PURE GOLD! The lyrics, for me, mean SO much more, coming from a woman. This is FANTASTIC! I'll never stop loving the MB version but, now, I NEED both in my life!

@graszka8890

David Cassidy had a great cover too in 1972.

@Cessounette

@Graszka Wings also did a great version of it in 1976 (Denny Laine sang lead vocals, as he did with the Moody Blues)
