Ellan Vannin
Bee Gees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the summer day is over
It's busy cares have flown
I will sit beneath the starlight
With a weary heart alone

Then it rises like a vision
Sparkling bright it shines for me
My own dear Ellan Vannin
With it's green hills by the sea

Let me hear the ocean murmur
Let me watch your stormy sky
Then above the emerald waters
Sings the seagull as she flies

Then it rises like a vision
Sparkling bright it shines for me
My own dear Ellan Vannin
With it's green hills by the sea

And in all my times of sorrow
And on some lonely shore

I'll go back to Ellan Vannin
To my childhood days once more

I've just returned from my brother's funeral on the Isle of Man and this song was played at the time of personal reflection. It was beautiful and extremely emotional but perfect for the occasion. I'll never be able to listen to this song again without thinking of my brother 💔 😪

So proud to come from the Isle of Man my mum used to go to school with the bee gees. But unfortually my mum passed away in 2021.I bet the Bee Gees would remember my mum Teresa Glover. Was Beresford !!

I'm born and bred on the Isle of Man, my heart thumps listening to this and tears well in my eyes. "Oh land of our birth, Oh, gem of gods earth, oh, Island so strong and so fair, built firm as Barrule, Thy throne of home rule, make us free as thy sweet mountain air" is our nation anthem, although, Ellan Vannin is our unofficial anthem.
Beautiful.

@ThePinkBinks

It’s not a gem anymore. It was 30 - 40 years ago but now it’s swimming in raw sewage and covered in filth. It used to be beautiful but now it’s dead.
