The Band was founded together with Geir Jenssen. He left after the second album in 1990 and pursued a solo career in ambient music as Biosphere.
During the years from 1985 to present (2006) Bel Canto have been taking breaks as Anneli Drecker has pursued a solo career and done concerts with other bands and artists (including touring with A-Ha), as well as playing in films and theatre plays. Nils Johansen, on the other hand, has composed music for film and television as well as working and performing with his other band, Vajas.
21 Years after the band was founded they are still active. In the fall of 2006 they continued to do concerts, primarily in Norway.
In 2007 Bel Canto will continue to work together, both by writing new material and by doing more gigs. At the same time both Anneli Drecker and Nils Johansen will also work on other projects. Latest update by 2022 is that Bel Canto are currently working on their next album.

Time Without End
Bel Canto Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You could be just like the sun
Beautiful like a dream
Innocent like a child
Heroic and brave
Like the kings and the warriors in the legends
Behold the depths of your innermost soul
A minotaur walking in endless despair
Mythical like a dream
Invisible like a soft breath of wind
But still in your fantasy
This will always be real
I'll show you who you are
I'll furnish you with a burning desire
I'll show you who you are
I'll furnish you with a burning desire
Bel Canto's song "Time Without End" contains multiple layers of meaning in its lyrics. On the surface, the song seems to encourage hope and positivity, while simultaneously acknowledging the struggles and difficulties of life. The first two lines of the song express the idea of hope that exists beyond measure: "Hope measuring time without end, you could be just like the sun." This suggests that hope is an infinite resource that can fuel us even in the face of hardship.
As the song progresses, the lyrics focus on the potential within each individual to be heroic and brave, despite the challenges that may arise. The lines "Beautiful like a dream, Innocent like a child, Heroic and brave, Like the kings and the warriors in the legends" call to mind the archetypal imagery of ancient myths and legends, which often featured powerful, larger-than-life heroes engaged in epic battles. The lyrics here encourage listeners to find strength and courage within themselves and to embrace their heroic potential.
The final lines of the song suggest that the singer is offering support and guidance to the listener: "I'll show you who you are, I'll furnish you with a burning desire." This implies that the singer sees great potential in the listener, and is willing to help them tap into that potential to achieve success and fulfillment.

I have loved this band since the 90's. Such beautiful, heart wrenching music! I couldn't control my tears, her voice kept making me cry.

In a way, they're a more poignant Cocteau Twins than the Cocteau Twins!
@desertkhaat
i remember randomly picking this cd in a bargain bin in NYC....many many years ago....i've long since lost it...remembered the thrill of discovery -something between deadcandance and the cocteau twins- and loved this song... thanks for sharing!

+skye a desertkhaatt -- Same here, and sometime in the late 90's while still remembering which store in NYC. I picked it up on the strength of the "Shimmering, Warm, and Bright" album which I already had, but I wound up selling it soon afterward to a then friend. I kind of regret it now but had a different mindset at the time. Oh well. :::shrug:::
@MuzikJunky
I heard it in played in-store at the old Tower Records at Lincoln Center back in 1989 and KNEW that I had to have it ASAP. I’ve loved Bel Canto and Anneli Drecker ever since. Even though Geir Jenssen left the band after its second album, his work as Biosphere is also worth checking out! The ultimate double bill would be Bel Canto opening for Dead Can Dance, but I think that Drecker only records solo now. Peace.

I love this band with a passion. It was the video from this album of "Shoulder To The Wheel" that turned me on to their music in 1989.
