@@ndo104no When two concepts which would typically be mismatched are put together then they are juxtaposed. In this case the "concepts" are the downcast lyrics and the mostly upbeat music.

I'd also go so far as to argue that the music itself is written in a way that juxtaposes itself, the way the repeating riff in the song starts out ending in a flat note and then rises in the second half of the track, but that could be a massive leap, my musical theory isn't exactly sound....

I heard this song on CBC Radio (Canadian Public Broadcaster) on my way home from work in fall 2010. It led me to discover Ben Folds and as a side shoot, Pomplamoose (they did a fun song together, along with Nick Hornby, "Things You Think").
I bought Ben Folds' perfect CD "Lonely Avenue", but I revisit this song constantly.....it is an awesome song paired with an awesome video.
Well done, Ben Folds, and thanks for introducing me to Pomplamoose so many years ago.

By far the standout song on Lonely Avenue. I'd heard that it wasn't quite up to par with Ben Folds' earlier work, but whoever said that was wrong; this song in particular is easily one of my favorite pieces of music ever.

+samisuz This song did make me sad for a while. I was married then, and was married for the wrong reasons. We got married trying to make things work after having a kid.

Three years ago, she moved out, and I think back to this song. This song that once made me sad was now making me happy. I actually got a second chance to find someone I want to spend the rest of my life with.

Needless to say, fast forward three years, I have met that person. I had a chance to start that part of my life over again.

It amazes me that even the best songs you hear on the radio, for those who still have one, can't even hold a candle to songs like these. If more record companies and radio stations noticed true artists like Folds, the music industry wouldn't be doing so bad.

That exactly happened to me,we meet at middle school, we used to live near from each other several years, but we never saw again after school, then she got married, I got married, and after 23 years we found each other again, we both got divorced and now we know we belong together I love her, and all I know she's the woman of my life. Besides, I just went to see Ben Folds live last saturday and he played this song, I got enough signals already, lol.

I've always wondered about this. I always believed in True love/Soul Mates but i never understood the process of finding them. I've been alone for most of my child hood and teen hood wondering about this. I was always feeling empty. This song tells me that its not uncommon that you may go through life never meeting this person, even though this person may sit next to you on the bus for example. Ive learned that if you've ever had an instant feeling of love when seeing somebody for the first time

Then quite possible that person could be what your missing. This song isn't about being alone or finding the one you love but finding that PERFECT person that was absolutely built for you. Everybody can get a gf/bf and live happy lives but to find that one person that completes you may never happen. It's like a riddle that can't be solved. If you ever saw that Robin Williams movie (What Dreams may come), then you know how impossible it is to find/or keep your soulmate.

Huh, I have known this song for 5 months or so but never knew the true meaning. I think it's an interesting take on life and love. It even seems true in a lot of cases. Love is worth a lot of risks and chances to take.

@sonica2 Ben Folds isn't obscure, or unnoticed. There may be a word for how the radio stations don't play him much anymore, but they definitely noticed him.
