What a way to cut me down
Everyone is shaking, no giving only taking
If I could only Kill that sound
If there is anyone still up there
Won't you take a good look around
Please heaven look down
Or know a home or know the way
Doesn't she deserve a chance
Her daddy can't keep from drinking
His heart has drowned and it's sinking
Somethin' come and save that man
If there is anyone still up there
Won't you take a good look around
When will heaven look down
[Chorus:]
Don't Don't Don't Don't leave
Don't Don't Don't Don't leave
I'm begging you God Please
Down on broken knees
If you can hear me now
Take a good look around
Then heaven look down
I don't really know the way-Out
I don't think I can take it anymore
The lyrics to Beth Hart’s song “Heaven Look Down” explore themes of despair, hopelessness and a cry for help from a world facing tremendous challenges. The opening lines, “Hell is on the TV, the world I know is screaming, What a way to cut me down” depict a world that is chaotic and troubled. The phrase “What a way to cut me down” is a play on words, alluding to the overwhelming nature of the world today and the toll it takes on people's mental health. Additionally, the depiction of everyone “shaking, no giving only taking,” portrays a society that is violent and self-serving, with little or no compassion for others.
The verse, “She will never go to school today, Or know a home or know the way, Doesn't she deserve a chance” is an emotional appeal to a higher power for intervention on behalf of an innocent girl. The girl’s father is lost and unable to provide for his daughter due to his drinking. The lines, “His heart has drowned and it's sinking, Somethin' come and save that man” are a cry for help from the father, who is lost in the darkness of his addiction, and a plea for mercy for his daughter who deserves a better life.
The chorus is a prayer. The singer implores God to listen to their plea, “Don’t Don’t Don’t Don’t leave” and to “Take a good look around, Then heaven look down”. The song highlights the need for a divine intervention to save the world from itself. The final line, “I don't think I can take it anymore,” encapsulates the sense of desperation and hopelessness that many people feel during difficult times.
In conclusion, Beth Hart’s song “Heaven Look Down” is a cry for help and a call for divine intervention in a world that is maddeningly chaotic, unpredictable and often cruel.
