He was considered the "ambassador" of the Favelas ( Brazilian Shanty Towns ). He was the singer of the Malandragem.
Bezerra was knowledgeable about life in the favelas, and the songs he sang are filled with slang terms having to do with drug dealing, the law, etc., and are often humorous. Later in life, not long before his passing, Bezerra gave up this life and became an evangelical Christian.

ninguém sabia o meu nome
eu só ouvia falar:
"é esse aí que é o homem"
Refrão:
é esse aí que é o homem (4x)
se acercava de mim
me olhando de cima pra baixo
balançando a cabeça que sim.
Refrão:
é esse aí que é o homem (4x)
Eu nada estava entendendo
e eles diziam:
"agora nós vamos. O mundo dá muita volta
até que enfim nós encontramos"
Refrão:
é esse aí que é o homem (4x)
Eles falaram pra mim
com toda convicção:
"você é o Bezerra da Silva. Está aqui o seu disco em
nossas mãos"
Refrão:
é esse aí que é o homem (4x)
É que nós somos compositores
e queremos gravar com você também
Porque já conhecemos a sua fama,
você não dá volta em ninguém
Refrão:
é esse aí que é o homem (4x)
This song by Bezerra da Silva, entitled "É Esse Aí Que É O Homem," tells the story of a man who is invited to a samba, but no one knows his name. However, as he arrives and starts mingling with the "maldandragem" (a group of clever, streetwise individuals), they quickly begin to recognize him as the man they have been hearing about. The refrain repeats throughout the song, with the malandragem asserting that he is indeed "the man" they had been expecting.
Throughout the verses, the man remains confused and unsure of what is happening, as the malandragem surround him, eye him up and down, and finally reveal that they are all musicians who want to collaborate with him on a record. The song ultimately ends on an optimistic note, with the malandragem praising Bezerra da Silva's reputation for being straightforward and unyielding.
