Where the Blue of the Night
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why must I live and dreams
Of the days I used to know
Why can't I find
Real piece of mind
And go back to the long ago

Where the blue of the night
Meets the gold of the day
Someone waits for me

And the gold of her hair
Crowns the blue of her eyes
Like a halo tenderly

If only I could see her
Oh how happy I would be

Where the blue of the night
Meets the gold of the day
Someone waits for me

If only I could see her
Oh how happy I would be

Where the blue of the night

Meets the gold of the day
Someone waits for me

Overall Meaning

These lyrics speak to the nostalgic feeling of longing for the past and the desire to return to simpler times. The singer laments the fact that they cannot seem to find peace of mind in the present and longs for the days of old. The mention of dreams emphasizes the idea that the past is almost like a dream, something surreal and fleeting that they cannot quite grasp onto.

The main focus of the lyrics lies in the chorus, where the singer describes a magical and idyllic place where "the blue of the night meets the gold of the day." This location is a place of peace and serenity, where the singer feels someone is waiting for them. The gold of this person's hair and the blue of their eyes create a halo-like effect, emphasizing their beauty and otherworldly nature.

The final lines of the chorus are a repetition of the idea that if only the singer could see this person, they would be happy. This reinforces the theme of longing and the desire for the past, indicating that this person may represent something that the singer has lost and cannot regain.

Overall, the lyrics of "Where the Blue of the Night" evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing for a simpler time, while also incorporating elements of magic and beauty.

One of the smoooooothest cats ever to dawn a microphone. The sophistication. The raw talent. Untouchable. Uncrushable.

Bing's theme song when he was at his best vocally.

Bear in mind that this song was first recorded in 1932, in the heart of the Depression. That explains the nostalgic, sentimental quality, which suits Bing's voice perfectly. It was an enormous hit and remains even today the song most identified with him, even allowing for the phenomenal success of his later recording, "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas."

In terms of quality of his voice, the '40 take may be my favourite, although the arrangement's Hawaiian elements do date the record a bit. Still, this one, the first, from Bing's "Ardent Lover" days, is the truly historic recording among the lot. His pal and accompanist, Eddie Lang, is present, and that's one reason for the historic quality.
