Produced by Chicago rancor-rock godfather Steve Albini, "Grafted to an Elbow" is oblique yet vehement, its unease with contemporary society conveyed more by TV- damaged titles like "Nature's Gentle Regulator" than by the cryptic, fragmentary lyrics spit out by David Bryant (Godspeed You! I Walk Alone
Bliss Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Around me stretch the waters knowing and unknown
The shimmering sea, the wind's wild song
Where does love go when the life you loved is gone ?
I walk alone, I walk alone
I walk alone, although my light is blown
A little voice inside me says just carry on
I walk alone only knowing the unknown
But beneath the sea, where my love has been thrown
I wish you peace and joy - a prayer from me
I walk alone, I walk alone although the coast is long
Surrounded by the skies of knowing and unknown
Diffusing the sunshine, the clouds of the storm
Where does love go when the life you loved is gone ?
How can God reclaim the life of one so young ?
How can God destroy a life that's done no wrong ?
I walk alone
I walk alone, I walk alone
There's no holding your hand
Now I'm walking alone, walking alone
And my life will be long
I walk alone, I walk alone
With the beat of the drum
Now I'm walking alone, walking alone
And I'm burning those bridges behind behind behind me
I walk alone, I walk alone
There's no holding your hand
Now I'm walking alone, walking alone
And I'm burning those bridges behind me
We'll kiss again when breath is gone
But now I walk alone
The lyrics of Bliss's song "I Walk Alone" paint a poignant picture of a sense of loss, longing and the need to carry on amidst overwhelming emotions. The singer, feeling alienated and out of place, walks along a seemingly endless coast as the waters around stretch into infinity, representing the unknown and the known. The shimmering sea and wild winds seem to speak of the unstoppable nature of life's changes and a sense of helplessness in the face of these. The question, "Where does love go when the life you loved is gone?" echoes the feeling of immense grief and loss.
The singer's "little voice inside" encourages them to "just carry on," and that they are walking alone only "knowing the unknown." The longing in the singer's voice and the feelings of nowhere to belong and no one to hold their hand are palpable. The mention of the life of one so young and the question of how God can destroy a life that's done no wrong speak of the universal pain of losing someone we love. The phrase "My life will be long," seems to signify the feeling that the future stretches out before with no clear path to follow.
However, the final lines of the song are a poignant prayer of peace and joy to the one they loved, offering comfort and hope for reunion beyond the confines of life. The song's haunting and melancholic melody and Bliss's soulful voice add to the depth and emotion of the lyrics, making it a touching and evocative musical piece.
