Blonde Redhead has gradually increased in popularity in the underground music scene. Their early music has been described as emulative of Sonic Youth, but their more recent releases have begun to stray from this generalization. Kazu Makino is noted for her high, eerie voice, which hovers over melodic guitar riffs and rhythmic drum beats.
The large span of time between Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and Misery is a Butterfly is attributed to Makino's recovery time after being trampled by a horse. Much of Misery Is A Butterfly's imagery and illustration is equestrian or reflective of the accident. In the liner notes, Makino thanks her doctors "and her friends who fed her and cheered her up when she couldn't do much on her own."
The band's 7th album is called "23" and was released in April 2007.
Their 8th album, "Penny Sparkle" was released in September 14, 2010.

Oh James
Blonde Redhead Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What are you waiting?
Love was ill and
No...no...no!!"
"Say...what's your man and
Say...what's the magic?
Kill your sad expressions
What's in your heart!!"
"What I'm trying to sell
Isn't all the same.
And what is every side?
Sensual?
And would be in distance
It's just a genuine need
For an average man
You and I nothing more
Than love what I love"
There's someone watching you
"Love all your sad expenses
Just a little more
Will you ever live it?
Will you ever know?"
What? Do you want me?
What are you waiting?
Love was ill and
No...no...no!!"
"What I'm trying to sell
Isn't all the same.
And what is every side?
Sensual?
And would be in distance
It's just a genuine need
For an average man
You and I nothing more
Than love what I love"
There's someone watching you
The lyrics to Blonde Redhead's "Oh James" are open to interpretation, as with much of their music. The song appears to be a conversation between two people, with the first speaker questioning what the other wants and what they are waiting for. Love is described as being ill, with the repeated "no...no...no!" indicating a refusal or denial. The second speaker responds by asking about the first speaker's man and magic, suggesting that they are trying to get to the root of their desires or motivations. They also mention killing sad expressions and not allowing others to touch what is in their heart.
The chorus repeats the same lines as the beginning, with the addition of "there's someone watching you," which could indicate a sense of paranoia or unease. The second verse again talks about what the first speaker is trying to sell and how it isn't the same as everything else. They question what is meant by "every side" and whether it is sensual. The reference to distance could mean physical or emotional distance, but the need is described as genuine. The closing lines echo the sentiment of loving what they love.
Overall, the lyrics suggest a desire for understanding and connection, but also a fear of vulnerability and a need for protection. The repeated "no...no...no!" indicates a resistance to something, possibly love or commitment. The reference to someone watching adds a layer of unease or paranoia, which could reflect a lack of trust or a sense of being watched or judged. The song invites interpretation and contemplation, leaving the listener to draw their own conclusions.
