Young Neil
Blonde Redhead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

After twelve long slow years gone by
You're still the only one
I cried when I saw you
Don't cry
I can find you when I can
I cried when I found you

Almost dead
Half-dead

Overall Meaning

In Blonde Redhead's song "Young Neil," the lyrics describe a possible reunion between two old friends who haven't seen each other in twelve years. The lines "After twelve long slow years gone by, you're still the only one" indicate a strong emotional connection, perhaps even romantic, that has withstood the test of time. The singer cries upon seeing the person again, emphasizing the depth of their feelings. However, despite this happy reunion, there is a sense of sadness in the lines "Almost dead, half-dead," suggesting that the two friends have been through difficult times during their separation.

The rest of the lyrics are intentionally vague, leaving room for interpretation by the listener. The line "Don't cry, I can find you when I can" could be seen as a promise to keep in touch and not lose contact again, while "I cried when I found you" could be seen as a release of pent-up emotions upon reconnecting. The unfinished line "[?]" also adds to the sense of ambiguity and mystery within the song, leaving the listener to fill in the blank with their own interpretation.

Overall, "Young Neil" is a beautifully melancholic song that touches on themes of nostalgia, loss, and the enduring power of human connection.

This song is actually Young Neil. This is track #8 on the original La Mia Vita Violenta CD, which is listed as Young Neil on the back of the album. I know that if you go to the Blonde Redhead YouTube channel, or look at WIkipedia, it will tell you that it's really "Jewel", but that is a mistake-- probably made by the label when they set it up, because I don't believe the band's social media is run by them directly.

There are 3 naming errors for this album online:

Young Neil was turned into Jewel
Jewel was turned into 10 Feet High
10 Feet High was turned into Young Neil

y"know I had this labelled as Young Neil years ago and that previous comment made me change it. I looked at the sources you mentioned and it had them switched so I just went with it. I checked discogs and it looks like you're right. Thanks for letting me know. Fixed! <3

I just woke up from a strange dream with this song stuck in my head. I didn't know what it was, not could I make out the lyrics... but I knew it must have been Blonde Redhead. I haven't heard this song in years. Like since the mid 2000s at least!

@@brianbaratheon 3 years ago I didn't know Discogs existed. Now that I've checked the physical editions' tracklists, yep, I was wrong! Thanks. The distributors really messed this up..
