Floating
Blue Rodeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Leave a strange taste,
Like french cigarettes.
And these colored drinks
That you keep on throwin' at me
Just keep on reminding me
I came to forget.
So now every night
You insist on reminding me
Of my lost possibilities
And the stains on the wall.
Well, I don't mean to complain
But it hurts just the same.
And now both of us know
The leaves will fall on their own.
Just throw me a line
That's all that I ask
Well, it's sink or swim and I'm goin' fast
I need love and it's you
And I feel like William Holden floating in a pool.
Yea, you tell me
Life is for living
It's best in the giving
But it's so hard to be free.
Still I do my best
But you refuse my gift
And now all that we share
Is a collection of tears.
Just throw me a line
That's all that I ask
I need love and it's you
And I feel like William Holden floating in a pool.
In the lyrics of "Floating" by Blue Rodeo, the singer describes their late-night conversations with someone who reminds them of their lost possibilities and stains on the wall. The drinks that are being thrown their way only serve as a reminder of why they came in the first place - to forget. The singer is clearly struggling with something, and they don't want to complain but it still hurts. They both know that the leaves will fall on their own, indicating a sense of inevitability and acceptance.
The singer’s plea to the person they’re speaking to is to “just throw me a line”- a simple request for some comfort, guidance, or even just attention. The reference to William Holden floating in a pool is a nod to the actor’s tragic death by drowning, and the parallels between the actor’s life and the singer's struggle are evident.
Although the lyrics in "Floating" leave many details open to interpretation, it's clear that the singer is searching for something - love, perhaps - that they can’t seem to grasp. They feel like they're sinking, and the person they’re talking to could be their lifeline.
