Blur's self-titled fifth album (1997) saw another stylistic shift, influenced by the lo-fi styles of American indie rock groups, and became their third UK chart-topping album. Its single "Song 2" brought the band mainstream success in the US for the first time. Their next album, 13 (1999) saw the band experimenting with electronic and gospel music, and featured more personal lyrics from Albarn. Their seventh album, Think Tank (2003), continued their experimentation with electronic sounds and was also shaped by Albarn's growing interest in hip hop and world music, featuring more minimal guitar work. Coxon left the band during early recording sessions for Think Tank, and Blur disbanded for several years after the end of the album's associated tour, with the members engaged in other projects.
In 2009, Blur reunited with Coxon back in the band and embarked on a European reunion tour. In the following years, they released several singles and compilations and toured internationally. In 2012, they received a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Their eighth album, The Magic Whip (2015), was the sixth consecutive Blur studio album to top the British chart. The group have largely been on hiatus since the Magic Whip tour, but have announced plans to reunite in 2023 for various live dates.

Waiting for an underground train
To rumble underneath my feet
Bang goes another day
Where it went I could not say
Now I'll have to wait another week
What was said was never done
Don't panic, it's not really worth your while
Bang goes another year
In and out of one ear
Everybody's doing it, so do it too
I don't need anyone
But a little love would make things better
I don't need anyone
But a little love would make things better
Sitting on the early bus
Passing through the morning rush
It makes no difference that I'm not with you
Bang goes another year
In and out of one ear
Everybody's doing it, I'll do it too
I don't need anyone
But a little love would make things better
I don't need anyone
But a little love would make things better
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
I don't need anyone
But a little love would make things better
I don't need anyone
But a little of your love can make things better
I don't need anyone
But a little love would make things better
I don't need anyone
But a little of your love can make things better
The lyrics to Blur's song Bang! convey a sense of ennui and frustration with the passage of time. The singer is sitting in a subway station, waiting for a train that will take them to their destination, and reflecting on how quickly another day has gone by. They feel that they have accomplished nothing and are resigned to the fact that they will have to wait another week for another chance. The repetition of "Bang goes another day" and "In and out of one ear" emphasize the fleeting nature of time and how easy it is to let it slip away.
The singer seems to be caught in a cycle of monotony, as evidenced by their daily commute on the early bus. They acknowledge that everyone else is doing the same thing, but they still feel disconnected from it all. The refrain "I don't need anyone, but a little love would make things better" suggests that the singer is searching for something more meaningful in their life, but they are also hesitant to fully commit to it. They are stuck in their routine and afraid to take risks.
Overall, the lyrics of Bang! are a reflection on the passage of time and the potential for meaning in our lives. It conveys a sense of apathy towards the monotony of daily routine, while acknowledging the possibility for something more.

Not only one of the most underrated Blur songs, but also very overlooked video. I find it fantastic.
