During 1970 and 1971, Wailer, Marley and Tosh worked with renowned reggae producers Leslie Kong and Lee "Scratch" Perry.
They released four albums before signing to Island Records in 1972. Two more albums were created before Tosh and Wailer left the band in 1974, citing grievances over label treatment and ideological differences. Marley carried on with a new line-up, including the I-Threes that put out seven more more albums. Marley died in 1981.
The Wailers were a groundbreaking ska and reggae group, noted for songs such as "Simmer Down", "Trenchtown Rock", "Nice Time", "War", "Stir It Up" and "Get Up, Stand Up".

You are somebody
But I don't love to say
You're not nobody
Don't exhaust our painted face, girl
'cause underneath that face
You're just have disgrace
You'll make no one fool
You're just a brand new second hand
I only confess you
You're brand new second had
Dirty golden rule
You're just a brand new second hand
What you've got, girl
That I don't know
Why you really really got to
Exalt yourself so
Mama used to tell me
A long time ago, girl
It's not everything you own
That glitters is gold
So you're just a brand new second hand
No man no want no
Brand new second hand
You better go back round so girl
Brand new second hand
Don't you show us
Brand new second hand
If you think it's the dress you wear
That makes you a lady
Get that out of your mind
You must be crazy
You're just a brand new second had, yes girl
No man no want
Brand new second hand, yes girl
No bother come show off so
You're just a brand new second hand
The song "Brand New Second Hand" by Bob Marley & The Wailers is a commentary on the societal pressure for people to constantly present themselves as new, fashionable and exciting. The lyrics refer to individuals who try to mask their flaws and imperfections with painted faces and expensive clothing, trying to be something they are not. The song suggests that there is no need for people to deceive themselves or others by trying to appear brand new when their true worth lies in accepting themselves for who they are.
The phrase 'Brand New Second Hand' highlights the central theme of the song which is the contradiction of the new and the old. It signifies the constant replacement of the old with the new, while disregarding the value of the old. He advises people to not exhaust themselves by trying to appear new but rather to reflect on their true value. This song has deep societal implications and explores themes of self-identity, self-worth, and authenticity.
