The band began as a solo project for singer-songwriter Dave Hosking in 2009) before quickly expanding into a full band. In February 2009, Hosking uploaded a track, "The Storm", to the Unearthed program on radio station Triple J, it became a featured song at the station. Hosking had met Killian Gavin who was a singer-songwriter and guitarist in Ovell, and the pair started jamming together. Tim Hart, from another university band Wintersound, joined as a drummer and singer-songwriter. Then they expanded with Jake Tarasenko (ex-Tripartisan Approach) on bass guitar. All four had fronted their own groups and became friends after regularly sharing the stage at gigs.
After winning the 2009 Unearthed competition, they gained a performance spot at the Australasian music festival Homebake. In 2010, Tim's brother Jon Hart joined the band as an official member; contributing vocals, mandolin, banjo and keyboards. They toured Australia opening for Angus and Julia Stone as a three-piece, with Tarasenko and Hart in London playing in Laura Marling's backing band. In May 2010, Boy & Bear released their debut extended play, With Emperor Antarctica. They then recorded the song "Fall at Your Feet" for He Will Have His Way, a tribute album to singer-songwriter brothers, Tim and Neil Finn. Boy & Bear's version of "Fall at Your Feet" was listed at No. 5 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2010. Another of their tracks, "Rabbit Song" was placed at No. 45.
In November 2010, their cover of "Fall at Your Feet" peaked at No. 34 on the ARIA Singles Chart. On 5 August 2011, Boy & Bear released their debut album Moonfire. In late 2012, the band announced that they had parted ways with Tarasenko. His replacement was Dave Symes, formerly of Seeker Lover Keeper and of Sarah Blasko's live backing band.

Boy & Bear Lyrics
My life been way too crazy,
I been feeling myself lately
Mind state been fuck you pay me
Make money don't let it make it me
So successful things start changing
Nowadays friendships is dangerous
Gotta watch who I hang with
Love from a distance no close exchanges
Whole lot to unpack, bro I been trippin
The way that I'm stepping the world gotta listen
Running shit it's no closing the distance
My drive on F1 engine
Money on crooked politician
My girlfriend the most gorgeous of women
But won't hesitate to punch on bitches
I'm the king of the club
I'm that boy from the trenches
I'm a man of business I do hands on business
I don't stand on business
I'm a warrior I stand on niggas
Protect all women and inspire the children
golden glow this rapper image
We wear the same clothes still I'd be different
They want me dead for the way that I'm living
Because they can't break down the things I been building
I shoulder shrug what you call expensive
My guns like hood rats they all came with extensions
Drum on the body we ain't talking chicken
Niggas talk money then say forget it
Always say forget it man
My life been way too crazy
I been feeling myself lately.
Mind state been fuck you pay me
Make money don't let it make it me.
So successful things is changing.
Nowadays friendships is dangerous
Gotta watch who I hang with
Love from a distance
No close exchanges nah
Gotta watch who I hang with
Love from a distance no close exchanges nah
I gotta heal
I'm from a city in love with the thrills
Shit is for real
My dawg sick and now HE ILL
Uh
I'm feeling ILL
I'm feeling sick of just poppin and pills
Closed the case
Told em no deal
All of my niggas is real
Still
Running that money and getting the bills
I gotta heal
Smoking the za cause it give me a feel
I got a shield
Block away all of the drama it kills
I gotta heal
Green on me look like a hill
My money long , your shit short like a Reel
Sex appeal she want eat me like a meal
Her Legs on my shoulders cause I had her head over hills
Said he got more motion than me boy let's be for real
I make more moves in a day by just standing still
I been feeling myself lately
Mind state been fuck you pay me
Make money don't let it make it me
So successful things start changing

I’ve listened to this song on repeat all day. It’s kinda my spundtrack of life now. Cannot wait for the new album! Don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for an album to come out before :)
