Fall 2001 brought the release of the band’s debut album, Cannon To A Whisper. Engineered and produced by Mike Fanuele (production manager for Dashboard Confessional), Cannon To A Whisper showcases a band coming into their own with influences ranging from Jeff Buckley and Sunny Day Real Estate to Van Halen and Led Zeppelin. Among the band’s most striking characteristics is the songwriting of singer/guitarist Fred Mascherino. Mascherino, who earned a degree in jazz guitar from Temple University, effortlessly constructs an elaborate interplay of passionate vocals and layers of unique, jazz-infused rock-based guitar. The debut album was heralded for its display of intense dynamics, dramatic crescendos and skilled harmonies. Keeping true to form, the band spent the remainder of 2001 and the majority of 2002 on the road with national touring acts Coheed & Cambria, Further Seems Forever, Hey Mercedes and Recover.
On May 6, 2003, Breaking Pangaea released their latest effort, an ep entitled Phoenix, through Equal Vision Records. Recorded by the production team at Big Blue Meenie Studios (Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, This Day Forward), Breaking Pangaea’s newest offering illustrates a band at the pinnacle of its maturation.

Breaking Pangaea Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's another kind of story she doesn't want to tell.
There's another road to hell, behind the bluer eyes horizon.
Stolen secrets say she knows he's never gonna stay.
I'll be the sun, I'll be the rain over you.
So he sees her, when he sees her,
She doesn't know what it means if the story's just a dream.
So I tell you words, she can't go back.
When he sees her running on...
Sees her running, sees her running on and on away.
The lyrics to Breaking Pangaea's song Skylight seem to be conveying a sense of helplessness and longing, with the singer taking on the role of both the source of light and darkness in someone's life. The opening line, "I'll be the sun, I'll be the rain over you", suggests that the singer is willing to be a constant presence in the other person's life, providing both joy and sadness, highs and lows. However, the second line implies that the other person has a secret they don't want to share, possibly a painful experience or memory that they don't want to confront.
The next few lines talk about the possibility of the other person being stuck in a "road to hell", which could refer to a difficult life situation or a mental state that they can't seem to escape. The mention of "bluer eyes horizon" seems to suggest that this state of mind is something that they've been dealing with for a while, perhaps to the point of becoming disillusioned with life.
The line "Stolen secrets say she knows he's never gonna stay" implies that the singer has some kind of foreknowledge about the other person's future, potentially revealing that their relationship might be temporary. Despite this, the singer seems willing to be there for the other person as long as possible, serving as a source of comfort and support, much like the sun and rain. The final lines paint a picture of the other person running away, escaping from their problems and from the singer, possibly indicating that their relationship was not meant to be.
