Melo was born in the East End of Hamilton, Ontario, to Maria and Augusto Melo, immigrants from São Miguel, Portugal. He professionally trained vocals at the Royans School for the Musical Performing Arts, which also featured Rock Star Supernova winner Lukas Rossi and Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida. He also volunteered to help in recording vocal harmonies with some of the school's students.
At the time of his Idol audition, he was still living in Hamilton working as a construction worker. He had auditioned in previous seasons but had not made it past the judges. In 2007 he was encouraged by his best friend and brother to try again in Toronto. His was the first audition shown in the television broadcast.
The judges praised Melo for his emotional performances and his command of the stage. After his performance of Karma Police by Radiohead in the Top 5 episode, the audience and judges gave him a standing ovation, with Jake Gold remarking, "I just hope the people at home understand what they just saw. Its one of the most magical moments ever on this show." Zack Werner added, "Your parents must be proud, they might have a son who is the next Canadian Idol."
On September 11, 2007, Melo won Canadian Idol, despite having been considered the "dark horse" at the start of the competition, and having landed in the Bottom 2 twice. He beat Jaydee Bixby for the title.
His first single, "All I Ever Wanted", was released at 12:00 AM on September 13, 2007. The song is also featured on his first album, Livin' It, released November 27, 2007.
Half As Good As You
Brian Melo Lyrics

It just started sinking in
Made a world where I could live
Gave me all you had to give
Took nothing in return
Oh I, wish I could describe the feeling
But I, couldn't find the words to say
[Chorus]
Who's watching over you
While you're helping me find my way
All the things that I went through
I thank God that I met you
I hope the day comes soon
Comes soon
Took me underneath your wing
Showed me everything I'd never thought I'd see
You taught me how to face my fears
Now it's all so clear
So clear
I, wish I could describe the feeling
Oh, if only I could find the words to say
[Chorus]
Who's watching over you
While you're helping me find my way
All the things that I went through
I thank God that I met you
I hope the day comes soon
When I'm half as good as you
When I'm half as good as you
And I've got so much to live up to
Who's watching over you
While you're helping me find my way
[Chorus]
Who's watching over you
While you're helping me find my way
All the things that I went through
I thank God that I met you
I hope the day comes soon
I hope the day comes soon
When I'm half as good as you
The song Half As Good As You by Brian Melo is a beautiful tribute to someone who has been there for the singer through thick and thin. The lyrics describe this person as having shown the singer a whole new world and having taught him how to face his fears. The singer acknowledges how much this person has given him without ever expecting anything in return. He admits that he doesn't have the words to describe the gratitude he feels towards this person.
The chorus, which is repeated multiple times throughout the song, is a testimony to the bond between the two people. The singer wonders who is watching over this person while he/she is busy helping the singer find his way. He thanks God that he met this person and hopes that someday he can be half as good as this person.
The beautiful melody of the song adds to its emotional impact. The simplicity of the lyrics makes the song easily relatable, as we can all think of at least one person who has influenced our lives in such a positive way.
