Melo was born in the East End of Hamilton, Ontario, to Maria and Augusto Melo, immigrants from São Miguel, Portugal. He professionally trained vocals at the Royans School for the Musical Performing Arts, which also featured Rock Star Supernova winner Lukas Rossi and Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida. He also volunteered to help in recording vocal harmonies with some of the school's students.
At the time of his Idol audition, he was still living in Hamilton working as a construction worker. He had auditioned in previous seasons but had not made it past the judges. In 2007 he was encouraged by his best friend and brother to try again in Toronto. His was the first audition shown in the television broadcast.
The judges praised Melo for his emotional performances and his command of the stage. After his performance of Karma Police by Radiohead in the Top 5 episode, the audience and judges gave him a standing ovation, with Jake Gold remarking, "I just hope the people at home understand what they just saw. Its one of the most magical moments ever on this show." Zack Werner added, "Your parents must be proud, they might have a son who is the next Canadian Idol."
On September 11, 2007, Melo won Canadian Idol, despite having been considered the "dark horse" at the start of the competition, and having landed in the Bottom 2 twice. He beat Jaydee Bixby for the title.
His first single, "All I Ever Wanted", was released at 12:00 AM on September 13, 2007. The song is also featured on his first album, Livin' It, released November 27, 2007.
She Moves Me
Brian Melo Lyrics

Paint a masterpiece or two
Maybe if I could man a rocket ship
And fly to the moon
If I could write the perfect symphony
Find a cure for some disease
Only then I'd have something to compare
The way I feel
[Chorus]
I thought that I'd seen it all
Guess I was wrong, so wrong
I thought that I'd seen it all
Guess I was wrong, so wrong
'Cause nothing can move me like you
If I'd written Romeo and Juliet
Had my own star in Hollywood
If I could paint the world one color
I know I've been moved
I know I feel
The way I feel
[Chorus]
At the speed of light, she comes in
Takes me to places I've never been
She shows me the way to heaven
She moves me
She moves me
[Chorus: x2]
If I'd written Romeo and Juliet
Had my own star in Hollywood
The lyrics to Brian Melo's song "She Moves Me" are a declaration of love, comparing the feeling of being in love to achieving great feats such as writing a book like Hemingway or finding a cure for a disease. The singer is expressing that nothing else compares to the way they feel when they're with their lover, emphasizing the phrase "she moves me" throughout the song as a way to convey the impact their partner has on them. The chorus repeats the phrase "I thought that I'd seen it all, guess I was wrong, so wrong" to suggest that the singer thought they knew everything there was to know about love but were mistaken when they met this particular person.
The verse about "painting the world one color" is interesting because it shows that the singer isn't interested in changing the world on a grand scale as much as they are interested in being moved by their lover. The lines "at the speed of light, she comes in / Takes me to places I've never been / She shows me the way to heaven" are particularly powerful because they convey the idea that the singer feels like they're going to new heights or experiencing something greater than themselves when they're with their partner. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes how deeply the singer feels about their partner and how nothing else compares to being with them.
