Melo was born in the East End of Hamilton, Ontario, to Maria and Augusto Melo, immigrants from São Miguel, Portugal. He professionally trained vocals at the Royans School for the Musical Performing Arts, which also featured Rock Star Supernova winner Lukas Rossi and Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida. He also volunteered to help in recording vocal harmonies with some of the school's students.
At the time of his Idol audition, he was still living in Hamilton working as a construction worker. He had auditioned in previous seasons but had not made it past the judges. In 2007 he was encouraged by his best friend and brother to try again in Toronto. His was the first audition shown in the television broadcast.
The judges praised Melo for his emotional performances and his command of the stage. After his performance of Karma Police by Radiohead in the Top 5 episode, the audience and judges gave him a standing ovation, with Jake Gold remarking, "I just hope the people at home understand what they just saw. Its one of the most magical moments ever on this show." Zack Werner added, "Your parents must be proud, they might have a son who is the next Canadian Idol."
On September 11, 2007, Melo won Canadian Idol, despite having been considered the "dark horse" at the start of the competition, and having landed in the Bottom 2 twice. He beat Jaydee Bixby for the title.
His first single, "All I Ever Wanted", was released at 12:00 AM on September 13, 2007. The song is also featured on his first album, Livin' It, released November 27, 2007.
I Gave You All My Life

Most of the time
You say that I'm as helpless as a baby
That's how you describe it
Yeah, I don't buy it
No, I don't buy it
Every time you put on that dress
You know the world is a mess
You say so all of the time
I'm not depressed
I'm still here trying
Let's leave it at this
I gave you all of my
You're impersonating strangers
Feeling in danger
Nothing is changing
That's how you describe it
We're undecided
Yeah, I can't fight it
Every time you put on that dress
Why are you crying?
You know the world is a mess
You say so all of the time
I'm not depressed
I'm still here trying
Let's leave it at this
I gave you all of my life
Put on that dress
Why are you crying?
You know this world is a mess
You say so all of the time
I'm not depressed
I'm still here trying
Let's leave it at this
Let's leave it at this
Every time you put on that dress
Why are you crying?
You know the world is a mess
You say so all of the time
I'm not depressed
I'm still here trying
Let's leave it at this
I gave you all of my life
I gave you all of my life
I gave you all of my life
I gave you all of my life
In the song I Gave You All My Life, Brian Melo sings about a relationship that has hit a rough patch. He addresses his significant other’s constant sadness, which he believes is being exaggerated to an extent. The lyrics suggest that though the world may be a difficult place to live in, he’s trying his best to stay positive and make things work.
The lines “You’re impersonating anguish, most of the time" and “You’re impersonating strangers, feeling in danger" strongly suggest a lack of authenticity in the relationship. Brian feels like his significant other is pretending to be someone other than who she truly is. Her constant tears and sadness seem to be a façade to him, as he cannot understand why she’s crying every time she puts on that dress.
The final lines of the chorus “I gave you all of my life, put on that dress, why are you crying?” emphasize the sadness and confusion Brian is experiencing. He genuinely loves this person and has given her everything he can, but it seems like it’s never enough to make her truly happy.
Overall, the song speaks to the complexities of relationships and how even the best intentions can’t always fix things. It’s a moving reflection on trying to find understanding and compromise with someone you love, even when it’s difficult.
