Crying in the Night
Buckingham Nicks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Times were hard
But she could come curling 'round you
Like fingers
But she'll leave you
Crying in the night
She will leave you
She's going to leave you
Crying in the night
She's back in town
And she's looking around
Say you needed someone to depend on
You're all alone
She's the only one
Who can come take you far away
Take your breath away
Come on baby
She's the wrong kind a' girl
She's a come-on lady
She's a tarnished pearl
She'll take your money
She'll wreck your world
Wreck your world
She's a come-on baby
Come-on girl
A "come-on" girl
Come on...girl
She's back
And she's looking around
And she's looking around
And she's looking around
The song "Crying in the Night" by Buckingham Nicks tells the story of a woman who is alluring and captivating, but ultimately unreliable and destructive. The opening stanza sets the scene as the singer describes the woman as the type who can "come curling 'round you like fingers". This imagery speaks to the woman's ability to draw you in with her charm and captivating personality. However, the chorus reveals the darker side of this woman as the singer warns that she will eventually leave you "crying in the night". Despite knowing that she is bad news, the singer acknowledges that she is the only one who can take you away and leave you breathless.
The second verse reinforces the danger of this woman, as the singer warns that she is the "wrong kind a' girl" and a "tarnished pearl". She will take your money and wreck your world. The repetition of the phrase "come-on" emphasizes her seductive nature, while also implying that her allure is ultimately false and misleading. The final stanza brings the song full circle, as the woman returns to town and begins her search for her next victim.
Overall, the lyrics of "Crying in the Night" convey a sense of caution and danger when it comes to matters of the heart. The woman described in the song is alluring and captivating, but ultimately unreliable and destructive. The song serves as a warning to those who may be tempted by the allure of a dangerous lover.

It got a lot of airplay in the southern Cal area and never could figure out why it didn't do better. I was a lowly swabbie just out of boot camp in San Diego at the time. Their time came about a year later. <G>
