King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

An Uncommon Love
Carole King Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All the walls we build between us
Make it so hard to be together
How can we tear at one another
When the thing we have in common
Is an uncommon love
So why can't we reach across the line
And touch each other
Here on two sides of the truth
We've a middle ground in common
We have an uncommon love
Time can heal, hearts can mend
So why can't we reach across the line
And touch each other
When will we ever learn
That the thing we have in common
Is an uncommon love
We have an uncommon love
An uncommon love
In the song An Uncommon Love, Carole King highlights the idea of how we create barriers or walls within our relationships that make it difficult to love each other wholeheartedly. She points out that despite having a rare and unique love bond, we still isolate ourselves from each other, failing to reach out for support, strength, or even just human connection. Carole King stresses on the pain that such walls create, making it a challenge to connect with each other emotionally and mentally. However, the singer believes that these walls can fall, and tears can mend, and we can still find ways to reach across and touch each other.
Carole King encourages her listeners to focus on their similarities instead of their differences, to find a common ground that can help heal the rifts between them. She reminds people that in the ever-changing circumstances of daily life, time can heal all wounds and mend our broken hearts, paving the way for renewed relationships. She invites listeners to consider why we can't reach out to each other, given the rare connection of love we share, and calls on people to learn from their struggles, overcome the obstacles in their relationships and strive towards a deeper connection with their loved ones
Line by Line Meaning
Why do we isolate each other
Why do we insist on pushing each other away?
All the walls we build between us
The barriers we put up separate us from one another
Make it so hard to be together
These walls make it difficult to connect with each other
How can we tear at one another
Why are we so quick to attack each other?
When the thing we have in common
Despite our differences, we share one thing
Is an uncommon love
And that is a love that is rare and unique
Walls can fall, tears can mend
There is hope for us to overcome these challenges
So why can't we reach across the line
Yet we still struggle to bridge the gap
And touch each other
To truly connect with one another
Here on two sides of the truth
We both have our own perspectives on the matter
We've a middle ground in common
But we can find common ground to stand on
Time can heal, hearts can mend
Given enough time, we can heal from our wounds
When will we ever learn
Despite this, we still struggle to understand
That the thing we have in common
That we both share that uncommon love
Is an uncommon love
A reminder of the unique bond we share
We have an uncommon love
And despite our struggles, our love still remains
An uncommon love
Yes, we have an uncommon love
