King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Monday Without You
Carole King Lyrics

Living in make-believe, perfect together
In your eyes I was number one
And you were all the world to me forever,
Ever and ever
But you have another life
You're going to somewhere I don't belong
I can't think about Monday
I can't think about watching you walk away
I only want to be with you,
I just want to be with you
I can't think about anything else but Sunday
And the touch of you
I only want to be with you,
I can't think about Monday without you
In an empty room
Waiting for a reason why
Trying, crying, dying
I know that it's over
But I don't want to hear you say goodbye
[Chorus]
The lyrics of the song "Monday Without You" by Carole King describe the intense emotions of a person who is in love but is about to lose the person they love. The first verse of the song conveys the happiness and contentment that the singer feels in a perfect relationship, where they feel loved and cherished. The line "In your eyes, I was number one" indicates the importance of their lover's opinion to them, making them feel valued and significant. However, the second part of the verse shows a break in this perfect world they have created together, where their lover departs from them. The lyrics "But you have another life, You're going to somewhere I don't belong" shows the singer's realization that they cannot be with their lover in the long run, and the relationship may only be temporary.
The chorus of the song is a plea from the singer not to leave them, as they can't imagine life without them. The lyrics "I can't think about Monday, I can't think about watching you walk away" show the significance of their lover's presence in their life, and their fear of being without them. The lines "I only want to be with you, I just want to be with you" emphasizes the singer's feelings of love and devotion towards their partner, only wanting to be with them. The lyrics "I can't think about anything else but Sunday and the touch of you" suggests the singer's desire for their lover's warmth, comfort, and love. The chorus ends with the line "I can't think about Monday without you," emphasizing their fear and pain of having to face the world without their lover.
