Beautiful
Carole King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've got to get up every morning
With a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes you will
That you're beautiful, as you feel

Waiting at the station with a workday wind a-blowing
I've got nothing to do but watch the passers-by
Mirrored in their faces I see frustration growing
And they don't see it showing, why do I?

You've got to get up every morning
With a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes you will
That you're beautiful as you feel

I have often asked myself the reason for the sadness
In a world where tears are just a lullaby
If there's any answer, maybe love can end the madness
Maybe not, oh, but we can only try

You've got to get up every morning
With a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes you will
That you're beautiful

You're beautiful
You're beautiful as you feel

Overall Meaning

"Beautiful" by Carole King is an uplifting song that reminds us to greet each day with a smile and show the world the love in our hearts. The lyrics suggest that by doing so, we'll find that people treat us better, and we'll feel beautiful. The first stanza sets up the theme, saying that every morning we should start the day with a smile on our face. The second stanza describes a situation. The singer of the song is at a train station, watching people go by. They all look frustrated and unhappy, and the singer wonders why she's the only one who seems to see it. The third stanza returns to the theme of the first, reminding us to start each day with a smile and love in our hearts. Finally, the fourth stanza acknowledges the sadness of the world and suggests that love might be the answer to the madness. Even if it isn't, it's still worth trying.

After the divorce, Dad used to get up real early before his five kids sleeping downstairs in his big lonely house. He would set up the kitchen to make pancakes and would wake us up by playing stuff like this to rouse us awake. One by one, we'd crawl upstairs sleepily while he excitedly handed us spatulas and teach the younger ones how to make pancakes. These were some of the best memories of my childhood.

Heard this while in a dark place at rehab and it helped turn everything around-now I read the lyrics or listen to it as part of my daily routine every morning.

Can I share your comment as encouragement to my friends? I won't abuse the comment and I have just a small audience, mainly for depressed older women.

Probably my favorite song on Tapestry. Love the beat of the melody and the meaning in the lyrics.
