King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

You've built these walls, they'ree your design
With sharp and angry lies, you've cut the binding ties
While making love seem so unkind
Well, all right, you go your way, I'll go mine
I'll get over you in time
There's nothing here to hold you now
You go your way, I'll go mine
I've tried to justify your thinking
I've given in and been denied
Like a hundred times before, you take
And ask for more
The only thing you leave is compromise
Well, all right, you go your way, I'll go mine
I'll get over you in time
There's nothing here to hold you now
We left those dreams so far behind
You go your way, I'll go mine
Oh, there's no need for false amending
Things get so confusing when you do
When love's become a loss, we spend our
Nights defending
I feel so damn defeated when we're through
But all right, you go your way, I'll go mine
I'll get over you in time
There's nothing here to hold you now
I just can't fight your willful mind
You go your way, I'll go mine
The lyrics of "Tonight You're Mine" by Carole King present the story of a relationship that is falling apart due to the distance and walls that one partner has built between them. The first verse highlights the hurtful actions of the partner who has cut the binding ties of the relationship with sharp and angry lies. It feels like making love is unkind and unimportant. But the other partner is resigned to the situation and acknowledges that there is nothing to hold the other person back. So, they say their goodbyes and go their separate ways, hoping to get over the other soon.
The second verse focuses on efforts from the other partner's side to make things work by justifying their partner's thinking and giving in, but nothing seems to work. The partner continues to take and ask for more, leaving only compromise as the result. There is no more dreaming or hoping to salvage the relationship as it is left too far behind. The lyrical content of the song is about resignation, acceptance, and moving on, letting go of something that is lost and not worth fighting for anymore.
