In 1950, Cruz made her first major breakthrough, after the lead singer of the La Sonora Matancera, a renowned Cuban orchestra, left the group and Cruz was called to fill in. Cruz was hired permanently by the orchestra, but she wasn't well accepted by the public at first. However, the orchestra stood by their decision, and soon Cruz became famous throughout Cuba. During the 15 years she was a member, the band traveled all over Latin America.

Donde el Señor quisiera dejar
La maravilla de tus pinceles
En cielo, tierra, mujer y mar
Valle viñales, Mariel, San Diego
Soroa linda, flores y luz
La maravilla, todo el encanto
Pinar del río qué lindo eres
De Guanajay hasta Guane
Y la ternura de tus mujeres
Ay, pero quita pesares
(Ay, yo me voy a pinar del río)
(Motivo dulce de mi cantar)
(Tierra de música y poesía)
(Bajo sus palmas quiero soñar)
Policromía maravillosa
De tu campiña que es un vergel
A del tabaco quedan tus vegas
Rica la piña caña de miel
Eres encanto del alma mía
Te lleva ardiente mi corazón
Y no hay un día que a Dios no pida
Que te bendiga plena de amor
Pinar del río qué lindo eres
De Guanajay hasta Guane
Y la ternura de tus mujeres
Ay, pero quita pesares
(Ay, yo me voy a pinar del río)
(Bajo sus palmas quiero soñar)
Eh, policromía maravillosa
De tu campiña que es un vergel
(Ay, yo me voy a pinar del río)
(Bajo sus palmas quiero soñar)
Pinar del río qué lindo eres
De mi mamá la tierra natal
(Ay, yo me voy a pinar del río)
(Bajo sus palmas quiero soñar)
In "Me voy contigo," Celia Cruz sings about her desire to go back to the countryside where she was born, after years of living in the city with her husband who doesn't like parties or drinking. She is tired of working without any breaks and wants to celebrate her life by going back to her roots. She sees the countryside as a place where she can have fun with her friends and family, and where she can dance and drink as much as she wants. She tells her husband that she is leaving him for a day to travel to the countryside and that she hopes he can understand her desire to engage in activities that bring her joy. She's not willing to bury herself in a corner and wants to live out her fullest potential by enjoying the pleasures of life.
The song is a representation of Cruz's social views on freedom, happiness, and the importance of embracing one's culture. Despite being a successful artist and having a stable life, Cruz identifies the need to celebrate life and be happy constantly. She recognizes the importance of organic experiences, staying true to one’s roots, and preserving one's soul, which is evident given her desire to go back to where she was raised. The song emphasizes the significance of ignoring societal barriers and forging one's own path, which reflects Cruz's own beliefs and values.

Me voy pa'l pueblo
I'm heading to the countryside
Hoy es mi día
Today is my day
Voy a alegrar toda el alma mía
I'm going to make my soul joyful
Tanto como yo trabajo
As much as I work
Y nunca puedo ir de basilón
I can never go out for fun
No sé qué le pasa con este guajiro
I don't know what's wrong with this man from the country
Que no le gusta el huateque y el ron
Who doesn't like partying and drinking rum
Ahora mismo la voy a dejar
Right now I'm going to leave her
En en el bohío asando maiz
Roasting corn in the shack
Me voy pa'l pueblo a tomarme un galón
I'm heading to the countryside to have a gallon
Y cuando vuelva se acabó el carbón
And when I come back, the charcoal will be finished
Desde el día en que nos casamos
Since the day we got married
Hasta la fecha trabajando estoy
Until this day, I'm still working
Quiero que sepas que no estoy dispuesta
I want you to know that I'm not willing
A enterrar mi vida en un rincón
To bury my life in a corner
Es lindo el campo muy bien ya lo sé
The countryside is beautiful, I already know
Pero p'al pueblo voy hechando un pie
But I'm heading to the countryside on foot
Si tu no vienes mejor es asi
If you don't come, it's better that way
Pues yo no sé lo que será de mi
Because I don't know what will become of me
