In 1950, Cruz made her first major breakthrough, after the lead singer of the La Sonora Matancera, a renowned Cuban orchestra, left the group and Cruz was called to fill in. Cruz was hired permanently by the orchestra, but she wasn't well accepted by the public at first. However, the orchestra stood by their decision, and soon Cruz became famous throughout Cuba. During the 15 years she was a member, the band traveled all over Latin America.

Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba
Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba
Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba
Ee mama ee mama
Ee mama ee mama
La rumba me esta llamando bombo
Que me espere un momentico asi
Mientras canto un guaguancó
Dile que no es un desprecio
Pues vive en mi corazón
Mi vida, es tan solo eso
Rumba buena y guaguancó
Ee mama ee mama
¿Cómo? ay dios mio
Pero que lio, y dice
Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba
Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba
Ay, si quieres gozar
Quieres bailar
Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba
Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba
Pero lo baila Teresa y lo baila Juanito
Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba
Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba
Pero lo baila Teresa y lo baila Joseito
Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba
Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba

Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba (Quimera)
Ay, Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba, quimera
The lyrics of Celia Cruz's song "Quimbara" are a celebration of Afro-Cuban music and dance, specifically the rumba and guaguancó. The repetitive and lively chorus "Quimbara quimbara quma quimbamba" is a call to dance and enjoy oneself. The singer acknowledges that the beat of the rumba is calling her and asks it to wait a moment, while she sings a guaguancó.
The lyrics also pay homage to the various individuals who can dance to the beat of the Quimbara, regardless of their backgrounds. The song emphasizes that the rhythm is for everyone and celebrates the unity that music can bring. The middle of the song features confused interjections from the singer, highlighting the joyous chaos of the dance.
Overall, "Quimbara" is a high-energy dance song that celebrates Cuban culture and the power of music to bring people together. The lyrics urge listeners to let go of their worries and dance to the beat of their heart.

Aside from a few words, I don't speak Spanish. However, I didn't let that stop me from badly dancing and humming to this song in the hallway of my family's apartment. 😆
