Flaming Lips
Miscellaneous
Charlie Manson Blues
The seance has just been told,
The slaughter has just been sold,
To some people who won't get old,
Cause their skin is getting cold.
The room that's in the back,
That's where I lost it all.
In the room that's in the back,
Let's go have a ball.

Cause I'm slipping into the Charlie Manson Blues.
I'm a stupid dressed Jesus son.
I'm slipping into the Charlie Manson Blues.
I'm a stupid dressed Jesus son.

Head burning up, chain-smoking,
Everybody here is choking.
Shrunken heads are joking,
And new-born skull is broke.

And the room that's in the back,
Is where I lost it all.
In the room that's in the back,
Let's go have a ball.

Cause I'm slipping into the Charlie Manson Blues.
I'm a stupid dressed Jesus son.
I'm slipping into the Charlie Manson Blues.
I'm a stupid dressed Jesus son.

Cause I'm slipping into the Charlie Manson Blues.

I'm a stupid dressed Jesus son.
I'm slipping into the Charlie Manson Blues.
I'm a stupid dressed Jesus son.

Whoa, Goddammit!
Shit!

Overall Meaning

The Flaming Lips' "Charlie Manson Blues" is a hauntingly unsettling song that poses a challenge for interpretation. The song uses the imagery of a seance, a slaughter, and cold skin to suggest that there is some kind of evil or malevolent force at work. The repeated refrain of "slipping into the Charlie Manson Blues" leads the listener to wonder what that might mean. Charlie Manson was, of course, the infamous cult leader who orchestrated a series of murders in the late 1960s. The reference to Manson suggests that the song is exploring the idea of how people can be drawn into darkness and become corrupted by their own desires.

The lyrics suggest that the singer is on some kind of journey or spiritual quest, but it's not clear what the ultimate destination is. The line "let's go have a ball" implies that there's a sense of danger and recklessness involved in this pursuit. The repeated use of the phrase "I'm a stupid dressed Jesus son" is intriguing because it could be interpreted in multiple ways. It's possible that the singer is mocking the notion of being a religious figure, or perhaps he sees himself as a savior of some kind. Overall, the song creates a sense of unease and tension that leaves the listener with a lot of questions about what's really going on.

This masterpiece was my first experience of jazz 20 yrs ago. It was just a noise for me but my roommate played this music over and over. After about 1 month, I suddenly could catch the rhythmus and was just stunned. I myself then played this music over and over again.

that being everywhere would be so damn annoying. im glad that this music exists but im also very glad about other stuff, from hip hop over to rossini operas towards old rock and roll and newer fucked up metal and ambiente. every genre is sick so i very much appreciate it that some genres time is over so new things can develop. i hate these kinds of comments.

Damn, one of the hardest swinging tracks in all of Bebop, in my opinion! I love everything about this: the melody, the solos, the groove... RIP Bird & Diz. We miss you! All the best, everybody.

@MrDaraghkinch

I agree, totally underplayed. The solos are absolutely smoking!
