I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water
Charlie Rich Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I was born in Macon, Georgia
They kept my Daddy in the Macon jail
He said, "son, if you keep your hands clean
You wont hear those bloodhounds on your trail"

Well I fell in with bad companions
I robbed a man up in Tennessee
They caught me way up in Nashville
They locked me up and threw away the key

Well I washed off my hands in muddy water
I washed off my hands, but they didn't come clean
I tried to do like my daddy told me
I must have washed off my hands in a muddy stream

I asked the jailer, I said "now when's my time up?"
He said "son, no we won't forget
And if you try and just keep your hands clean
We may just make a good man of you yet"

I couldn't wait to get my time in
I broke out, broke out the Nashville jail
I just crossed Atlanta, Georgia
And I can hear those bloodhounds on my trail

I washed off my hands in muddy water
I washed off my hands, but they didn't come clean

I tried to do like my daddy told me
I must have washed off my hands in a muddy stream

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Charlie Rich's "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water" tell a story of a man who was born in Macon, Georgia, and whose father gave him advice to keep his hands clean to avoid getting in trouble with the law. However, despite his father's words, he falls into bad company, and eventually gets caught after robbing a man in Tennessee. He is thrown in jail in Nashville, and while he tries to follow his father's advice by washing his hands in muddy water, he discovers that it doesn't "clean" him of his wrongdoings. He seeks guidance from the jailer, who advises him to keep his hands clean to become a good man, but he can't resist the temptation to run once he hears the bloodhounds chasing him.

Overall, the song is a cautionary tale about the dangers of succumbing to bad influences despite one's upbringing, and the consequences of breaking the law. It also speaks to the irony of the situation where the singer tries to wash off his past but realizes that he can't escape the stains on his reputation.

@cyedrysek

Okay, must share an embarrassing story. My siblings and I would go to the Rotary Park in Oklahoma City many, many moons ago. There were so many kids waiting to swim that you just had to wait your turn. So...I would go into the clubhouse to listen to records and kill time. Charlie Rich was my favorite singer and this was my favorite song. So...I put the album on, and went up to the mic and grabbed it to sing along and totally forgot about how water and electricity don't mix and, you guessed it, got the crap shocked out of me! Cause I was still wet from my previous swim and yeah, bzzzzzz! Still loved Charlie, still do! Man ahead of his time.
