Gainsbourg made her motion picture debut playing Catherine Deneuve's daughter in the film Paroles et musique (1984). In 1986, Gainsbourg won a César Award for "Most Promising Actress" for L'effrontée, and, in 2000, she won "Best Supporting Actress" for the film La Bûche.
Gainsbourg made her musical debut with her father on the song "Lemon Incest" in 1984. Two years later, she released her debut album Charlotte for Ever, which was produced by her father.
In 2007, Gainsbourg appeared alongside Gael Garcia Bernal in Michel Gondry's La Science des rêves and as Claire in the Todd Haynes directed Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There, also contributing a cover of the Dylan song "Just Like A Woman" to the film's soundtrack.
In 2006, Gainsbourg released her second album 5:55 to critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching the top spot on the French charts and achieving platinum status in the country. In the UK, the album was moderately successful, reaching #78 (The single The Songs That We Sing only made #129).
Gainsbourg has recently released her third studio album, IRM, which was produced by Beck. One of the influential factors in the album's creative process was her time spent filming Antichrist.
Little Monsters
Charlotte Gainsbourg Lyrics

Children sing their songs and skin their knees
Play little monsters, play
I remember doing just the same so many years ago
And the things they'd say
I could handle sticks and stones
But those words still break my bones
[Chorus]
Little monsters that rule the world
You don't know what you're really saying
Stop before someone ends up getting hurt
Can't you see that we're only playing
I remember I was just another monster without life
'til the day you came
Dirty creatures, tiny animals that crawl towards the light
Don't you ever change
[Chorus]
Little monsters that rule the world
You don't know what you're really saying
Stop before someone ends up getting hurt
Can't you see that we're only playing
One day you will have to go
You'll have to learn to live alone
[Chorus]
I can't hold your hand anymore
I can't always kiss you better
Time to stand on your own two feet
Time to see just where they get you
Deep inside I'm still the same
Just one more little monster
Making out that she knows the rules
A sincere impostor
The song "Little Monsters" by Charlotte Gainsbourg captures the essence of childhood innocence and the memories it captures. In the opening lines of the song, Charlotte describes a playground where kids sing their songs, play around and get hurt. She compares herself to these kids, saying that she has also been in their shoes many years ago, and she remembers the things they say. She loved playing just like them, but some words still hurt her inside, more than sticks and stones. The chorus with its catchy tune and lyrics warns these monsters-children to stop before the utter something too hurtful, to think before they speak, and see that they are just playing.
Charlotte's lyrics show that even small things can break somebody's heart or bruise their emotions, they tolerate a lot of things and move on indignantly with time. The second verse of "Little Monsters" talks about how crazy and chaotic life looks to children, like dirty creatures and animals, and they find joy in crawling towards the light, towards happiness. The outro of the song reminds us that time passes quickly, and kids must grow and move on, become independent, and not rely on others anymore.
Overall, "Little Monsters" is a song about the freedom that childhood provides, the innocence of their minds, and how we all learn from our failed experiences to build a robust personality through the years.

Dans la cour de récréation
In the playground
Children sing their songs and skin their knees
Jouez aux petits monstres, jouez
Play little monsters, play
I remember doing just the same so many years ago
Et les choses qu'ils diraient
And the things they'd say
I could handle sticks and stones
But those words still break my bones
Petits monstres qui gouvernent le monde
Little monsters that rule the world
You don't know what you're really saying
Stop before someone ends up getting hurt
Can't you see that we're only playing
I remember I was just another monster without life
jusqu'au jour où tu es venu
'til the day you came
Dirty creatures, tiny animals that crawl towards the light
Ne changez-vous jamais
Don't you ever change
Petits monstres qui gouvernent le monde
Little monsters that rule the world
You don't know what you're really saying
Stop before someone ends up getting hurt
Can't you see that we're only playing
Un jour tu devras partir
One day you will have to go
Vous devrez apprendre à vivre seul
You'll have to learn to live alone
Petits monstres qui gouvernent le monde
Little monsters that rule the world
You don't know what you're really saying
Stop before someone ends up getting hurt
Can't you see that we're only playing
I can't hold your hand anymore
I can't always kiss you better
Time to stand on your own two feet
Time to see just where they get you
Au fond, je suis toujours le même
Deep inside I'm still the same
Encore un petit monstre
Just one more little monster
Faire comprendre qu'elle connaît les règles
Making out that she knows the rules
Un imposteur sincère
A sincere impostor
