By 2017, several of Cutler's songs (including "Your Shirt") garnered numerous streams and led to collaborations that year with acts like Louis The Child ("Slow Down Love"), ayokay ("The Shine"), Kidswaste ("Tonight"), and Kasbo ("Found You"). She signed a record deal with Ultra Records in late 2017 and released her first EP, "Snow In October". After touring with Quinn XCII in early 2018, Cutler released two independent mixtapes, "Sleeping With Roses" and "Sleeping With Roses II." She also went on her first two nationwide headlining tours in support of each mixtape, both of which sold out in advance.
In March 2019, she signed to Republic Records and released a joint EP, "brent", with friend and label-mate Jeremy Zucker shortly after. The EP features the single "you were good to me", which they performed live on The Today Show. It was also pressed on a limited edition white vinyl through the retailer Urban Outfitters. It was limited to a run of 1000 copies pressed. In May 2019, Cutler collaborated with Kygo on the single, "Not OK". It became her third collaboration (after "Slow Down Love" and "The Shine") to appear on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart, peaking at number 9.
In late 2019, Cutler began releasing new singles, including "How To Be Human" and "Lucky" (featuring Alexander 23). Along with "Sad Tonight", the songs served as the primary singles for her debut studio album, How To Be Human, released on January 17, 2020 by Republic Records. On January 23, 2020 she performed the lead single, "Sad Tonight", on Late Night With Seth Meyers. That song became Cutler's first entry on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, peaking at number 32 in March 2020. In April 2020, she was featured alongside Quinn XCII on the Louis The Child track, "Little Things".
Cutler was also slated to perform at Coachella 2020, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, she released a version of her song "Crazier Things" which features Noah Kahan.

Hold Me While It’s Ending
Chelsea Cutler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We're dancing and laughing
Like this isn't the end
Wear me over your shoulder
As the evening gets colder
Like we meant what we said
We both know this isn't right
We both know good things can end
I just don't wanna have to let you go yet
Don't wanna crash
My body is shaking
Did you think we could make it
Something better than this?
Is your mind made up?
Tell me, does it falter?
Can this get any harder
Than it already is?
We both know this isn't right
Love isn't supposed to keep you up at night
We both know good things can end
I just don't wanna have to let you go yet
These hearts weren't made for bending
So hold me while it's ending
It's easier pretending
So hold me while it's ending
These hearts weren't made for bending (oh)
So hold me while it's ending (so hold me, hold me)
It's easier pretending
So hold me while it's ending (oh, yeah)
We both know this isn't right
Love isn't supposed to keep you up at night
We both know good things can end
I just don't wanna have to let you go yet
In the beginning of the song "Hold Me While It's Ending" by Chelsea Cutler, the lyrics paint a picture of a bittersweet moment in Manhattan, where the singer and their partner are enjoying a night together despite knowing that their relationship is coming to an end. They are trying to hold onto the fleeting moments of happiness as the night grows colder, symbolizing the inevitable distance that will soon separate them.
As the song progresses, the lyrics delve into the conflicted emotions of both individuals involved. They are aware that their love is not sustainable and keeping them awake at night, but they struggle with accepting the inevitable end of their relationship. There is a sense of reluctance and uncertainty in letting go, as they question whether there could have been something better between them and if they could have made it work despite the challenges they face.
The chorus emphasizes the struggle of coming to terms with the impending breakup, acknowledging that their hearts are not built to withstand the pain and uncertainty of separation. The plea to "hold me while it's ending" reflects a desire for temporary comfort and respite from the heartache, even if it means pretending that everything is still intact. There is a sense of vulnerability and raw emotion in admitting that it is easier to hold onto the fragments of a fading love than to confront the reality of letting go.
In the final verses, the lyrics reiterate the conflicting feelings of knowing that their relationship is not right and acknowledging that good things can come to an end. Despite this awareness, the singer is not ready to say goodbye just yet, clinging to the hope that perhaps there is still a chance to salvage their connection. The repetition of the plea to "hold me while it's ending" encapsulates the emotional turmoil of trying to grasp onto the last moments of intimacy before facing the inevitable separation. The song captures the complex emotions of love, loss, and acceptance in the face of an ending relationship.
