By 2017, several of Cutler's songs (including "Your Shirt") garnered numerous streams and led to collaborations that year with acts like Louis The Child ("Slow Down Love"), ayokay ("The Shine"), Kidswaste ("Tonight"), and Kasbo ("Found You"). She signed a record deal with Ultra Records in late 2017 and released her first EP, "Snow In October". After touring with Quinn XCII in early 2018, Cutler released two independent mixtapes, "Sleeping With Roses" and "Sleeping With Roses II." She also went on her first two nationwide headlining tours in support of each mixtape, both of which sold out in advance.
In March 2019, she signed to Republic Records and released a joint EP, "brent", with friend and label-mate Jeremy Zucker shortly after. The EP features the single "you were good to me", which they performed live on The Today Show. It was also pressed on a limited edition white vinyl through the retailer Urban Outfitters. It was limited to a run of 1000 copies pressed. In May 2019, Cutler collaborated with Kygo on the single, "Not OK". It became her third collaboration (after "Slow Down Love" and "The Shine") to appear on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart, peaking at number 9.
In late 2019, Cutler began releasing new singles, including "How To Be Human" and "Lucky" (featuring Alexander 23). Along with "Sad Tonight", the songs served as the primary singles for her debut studio album, How To Be Human, released on January 17, 2020 by Republic Records. On January 23, 2020 she performed the lead single, "Sad Tonight", on Late Night With Seth Meyers. That song became Cutler's first entry on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, peaking at number 32 in March 2020. In April 2020, she was featured alongside Quinn XCII on the Louis The Child track, "Little Things".
Cutler was also slated to perform at Coachella 2020, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, she released a version of her song "Crazier Things" which features Noah Kahan.

When I Close My Eyes
Chelsea Cutler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All I wanted, I still needed more just as soon as I got it
Baby, I'm scared we're gonna die still living like this
Maybe satisfaction don't exist
God give me the things I need
To open up my heart and let you in
Tell me it's all enough
When I close my eyes
I see each of the hundred lives that I could live
I know it's all enough
I know it's all enough to be here, waking up
Wanted magic, but how many dreams have we left in the attic
Collecting dust with my youth, all the things that I do that I don't believe in
God give me the things I need
To open up my heart and let you in
And know it's all enough
Tell me it's all enough
When I close my eyes
I see each of the hundred lives that I could live
I know it's all enough
I know it's all enough to be here, waking up
Baby, I'm scared we're gonna die still living like this
Maybe satisfaction don't exist
God give me the things I need
To open up my heart and let you in
And know it's all enough
Tell me it's all enough
When I close my eyes
I see each of the hundred lives that I could live
I know it's all enough
I know it's all enough to be here, waking up
The lyrics of Chelsea Cutler's song "When I Close My Eyes" delve into themes of longing, dissatisfaction, and the search for meaning in life. The opening lines, "I'm falling, I'm counting my steps from the top to the bottom / All I wanted, I still needed more just as soon as I got it," express a sense of restlessness and perpetual dissatisfaction. It reflects a common human tendency to constantly seek something more, even when we achieve our desires.
The chorus, "God give me the things I need / To open up my heart and let you in / And know it's all enough / Tell me it's all enough," captures a plea for spiritual fulfillment and a desire for a deeper connection with something greater than oneself. The singer recognizes the need to let go of material desires and embrace a more meaningful existence. They yearn for reassurance that their life is meaningful and complete as it is.
"When I close my eyes / I see each of the hundred lives that I could live" symbolizes the countless possibilities and choices one faces in life. It suggests the contemplation of different paths and the innate fear of missing out on other experiences. Despite these potential paths, the singer comes to the realization that their current reality is enough. They acknowledge that it is sufficient to be present in the moment and appreciate the simple act of waking up each day.
The recurring line, "Baby, I'm scared we're gonna die still living like this / Maybe satisfaction don't exist," reflects a fear of reaching the end of life without ever finding true fulfillment. The song wrestles with the idea that perhaps satisfaction is elusive, always just out of reach. It confronts the anxiety of living a life that falls short despite efforts to acquire more and achieve happiness.
Overall, Chelsea Cutler's "When I Close My Eyes" examines the human desire for purpose and fulfillment, recognizing the importance of appreciating the present and acknowledging that satisfaction may not lie in material possessions or external achievements. It encourages embracing the present moment, finding contentment in the here and now, and seeking a deeper connection with oneself and something greater.

After Spotify finally got lyrics I realized the lyrics are not "I know it's all enough to be here waking up" and instead it's "I know it's all enough to be here with you now" and I'm shook! It changes the meaning for me...
I thought it was about being enough to keep waking up. For me it'll always be the first one when I listen to this song.
Anyone else have any misheard lyrics stories? lol
