Virginia Woolf Underwater
Chelsea Wolfe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything you've owned is gone
Everything you know is wrong
Everyone you've loved has left
Everything you've touched is dead

Everyone you know is gone
Everything you've touched, gone wrong
Take my hand, raise up underground
Listen well, follow the sound
(Chains moving along link our legs)??
Never quite knowing where to stay and rest for awhile

When you're underwater whisper
Wait for all the sounds to fall away
When you're underwater (insert your feet on the wall of things)??

Overall Meaning

"Virginia Woolf Underwater" by Chelsea Wolfe is a haunting and emotional track that explores the themes of loss, isolation, and longing. The opening lines, "Everything you've owned is gone, everything you know is wrong, everyone you've loved has left, everything you've touched is dead" sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer seems to be struggling with the aftermath of a great loss, and everything around her seems to be falling apart. The repetition of "gone" and "wrong" sets a sense of hopelessness and emptiness.

The second verse introduces the feeling of being alone in the world. "Everyone you know is gone, everything you've touched, gone wrong" suggests that the singer may feel responsible for the loss in her life. However, there is still a sense of hope as she reaches out for someone to "Take my hand, raise up underground, listen well, follow the sound." The imagery of being underground seems fitting for the feel of the song, as if the singer is trapped in a dark and empty place, searching for a way out.

One of the most hauntingly beautiful song I've ever heard. So melancholic, deep and emotional.

For anyone who isn't aware, Virginia Woolf drowned herself, by putting rocks in her pockets.
She was a great writer and you should check her out if you dont know who she is.

Yeah, you are so right! I bought this album (Unknown Rooms) in her last tour this year because I love this song but to my surprise this song is not included in the original album tracklist and I hoped it could be a hidden song but, no! Later I found this song is only as a bonus track for the mp3 album on Bandcamp. Anyway, there is nothing like the physic album.
