I know people love Ellen Paige, but Helen Sjöholm just completely owns this role. I had seen Chess staged many times before with all the various reworkings of the book but it wasn't until this version and, in particular, her performance that the whole production gelled.

Plus Helen doesn't sing everything through her nose. Her technique is way more flexible and richer in tonality.

The Swedish lyrics to this is so much better than the english version too. The word in Swedish for reason and soul sounds the same so it goes "And when he tries to explain, the mistakes he has made, I don't believe his reason/soul." So it gets deeper somehow.

I LOVE the frantic madness of how this is presented. Not sure how much the lyrics have changed between versions, but it works as a search for personal agency, or even a way to unclench JUST ONCE.
