The firstborn son of Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Buarque lived at several locations throughout his childhood, though mostly in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rome. He wrote and studied literature as a child and found music through the bossa nova compositions of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. He performed as a singer and guitarist in the 1960s as well as writing a play that was deemed dangerous by the Brazilian military dictatorship of the time. Buarque, along with several Tropicalist and MPB musicians, was threatened by the Brazilian military government and eventually left Brazil for Italy in 1969. However, he came back to Brazil in 1970, and continued to record, perform, and write, though much of his material was suppressed by government censors. He released several more albums in the 1980s and published three novels in the 1990s and 2000s.
In 2019, Buarque was awarded the Camões Prize, the most important prize for literature in the Portuguese language.

Cansou de esperar por mim
Acenda o refletor
Apure o tamborim
Aqui é o meu lugar
Eu vim
Fechou o tempo, o salão fechou
Acenda o refletor
Apure o tamborim
Aqui é o meu lugar
Eu vim
Eu sei que fui um impostor
Hipócrita querendo renegar seu amor
Porém me deixe ao menos ser
Pela última vez o seu compositor
Quem vibrou nas minhas mãos
Não vai me largar assim
Acenda o refletor
Apure o tamborim
Preciso lhe falar
Eu vim
Com a flor
Dos acordes que você
Brotando cantou pra mim
Acenda o refletor
Apure o tamborim
Aqui é o meu lugar
Eu vim
Eu era sem tirar nem pôr
Um pobre de espírito ao desdenhar seu favor
Porém meu samba, o trunfo é seu
Pois quando de uma vez por todas
Eu me for
E o silêncio me abraçar
Você sambará sem mim
Acenda o refletor
Apure o tamborim
Aqui é o meu lugar
Eu vim
The lyrics of Chico Buarque's song "De volta ao samba" (Back to samba) convey a message of a prodigal son returning to his roots. The song starts with the singer acknowledging that he was thought to be gone for good, and the person who expected him grew tired of waiting. However, he informs them that he has returned and that this is where he belongs. The imagery of turning on the spotlight and getting the drumbeats perfect create a celebratory feeling that gives the impression of a homecoming. The next verse repeats the same pattern, with the singer confidently asserting that he will enter the closed hall. He acknowledges that he was an impostor, unable to recognize and accept the love that he received. However, he pleads with them to allow him to be the composer one more time.
The following verses contain a mix of regret, thanks, and admiration. The singer admits he was callous and ungrateful in the past, but he wants to make things better. He acknowledges that even though he has been away, he has not forgotten how to create great music; he sings of the flower of chords that are still in his mind, courtesy of his erstwhile muse. He builds on the metaphor of the drumbeats, using them to express the need to communicate his feelings and to affirm that his place is still there. In the final verse, he recognizes that, ultimately, all the credit should go to the person who inspired him in the first place. He acknowledges the resilience of the person who supported him despite his flaws and says that it is their samba, which is his trump card.
