I Just Want To Make Love To You
Chuck Berry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't want you be no slave
I don't want you work all day
I don't want 'cause I'm sad and blue
I just want to make love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
Love to you
I don't want you cook my bread
I don't want you make my bed
I don't want your money too
I just want to make love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
Love to you

Well I can tell by the way that you twitch and walk
See by the way that you baby talk
Know by the way that you treat your man
I can love you, baby, till the night train

I don't want you wash my clothes
I don't want you leave the home
I don't want 'cause I'm sad and blue
I just want to make love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
Love to you

Yeah

I don't want you wash my clothes
I don't want you leave the home
I don't want 'cause I'm sad and blue
I just want to make love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
Sweet love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
I just wanna make love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
Love to you, baby
Love to you

I just, I just want ot make love to you, baby
I just want to make love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Chuck Berry’s song “I Just Want To Make Love To You” tell the story of a man who desires a woman but does not want her to be his servant in any way. The song presents a clear picture of what the man does not want – he does not want her to be a slave or work all day, cook his bread or make his bed or wash his clothes. Instead, he just wants to make love to her. He is able to discern her availability from the way she walks and talks, adding to his desire to fulfill his sexual fantasies with her.

The song emphasizes the importance of this sexual act, as he repeats the lyrics “Love to you” throughout the song. The repetition emphasizes that he only wants to engage in this one act with her and does not want anything more. The song ends with the same message of desire, emphasizing his singular intention to make love to her.

The message of the song can be seen as both a testament to sexual liberation and a nod to traditional gender roles. The man wants to fulfill his sexual appetite but does not want the woman to assume any other responsibilities in his life. It is a message that suggests men have certain expectations of women that lack nuance or depth. Nevertheless, the song is seen as one of Berry’s memorable works and is noteworthy for its infectious beat and clever lyrics.

As a white American woman, please allow me to gently and respectfully correct you AND emphatically join with you in an effort to educate the vast population of extremely poorly educated Americans, my sister —-

EVERY MONTH IN AMERICA IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH!!!

This country would not even exist absent the blood, sweat, pain, and tears of our Black brethren!

We have NO right to be the country we are today, and we have NO standing to treat our Black citizens as we do, nor to discount and disrespect our country’s Black founders.

Much love and respect to you! ❤️

I would like to contribute to the second lesson:

Y’all know how Ronnie James Dio is credited with putting the Sign of the Horns 🤘 (aka the “devil horns” or “rock on” hand sign) into rock music, and how Black Sabbath is credited as being the first “Satanic” rock band, right? Well, it was actually a female-fronted band called Coven that did both of those things first.

Ronnie was friends with the members of Coven, and he got the idea to use the Sign of the Horns 🤘 after seeing Esther “Jinx” Dawson of Coven throw up the Horns at the concerts they performed at the Rainbow Bar & Grill, as she always did.

And the band formerly called Earth, and another British band formerly called Pesky Gee!, changed their names to Black Sabbath and Black Widow, respectively, and copied their entirely new aesthetics from Coven’s 1969 album Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls.

Coven is the root of pretty much all metal culture. Oh, and King Diamond copied the lyrics for Mercyful Fate’s iconic song “The Oath” entirely from the Coven track “Satanic Mass”.

I love the way you are giving black people back their credit in your dark history podcast. Thank you for that. 😊

@Projection v. Accountability they mean that Bailey gives back the credit, instead of them not getting credit for their contributions to music
