Maybellene
Chuck Berry Lyrics

Maybellene, why can't you be true
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
You've started back doin' the things you used to do

As I was motivatin' over the hill
I saw Mabellene in a Coup de Ville
A Cadillac arollin' on the open road
Nothin' will outrun my V8 Ford
The Cadillac doin' about ninety-five
She's bumper to bumper, rollin' side by side
Maybellene
Why can't you be true
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
You've started back doin' the things you used to do

The Cadillac pulled up ahead of the Ford
The Ford got hot and wouldn't do no more
It then got cloudy and started to rain
I tooted my horn for a passin' lane
The rainwater blowin' all under my hood
I know that I was doin' my motor good
Maybellene
Why can't you be true
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
You've started back doin' the things you used to do

Oh, Maybellene
Why can't you be true
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
You've started back doin' the things you used to do

The motor cooled down the heat went down
And that's when I heard that highway sound
The Cadillac asittin' like a ton of lead
A hundred and ten half a mile aheadv The Cadillac lookin' like it's sittin' still
And I caught Mabellene at the top of the hill
Maybellene
Why can't you be true
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
You've started back doin' the things you used to do

The Rock 'n Roll LIVE R.I.P. Chuck Berry

Squig Rattlehead

If Elvis got the title of "King of Rock" then Chuck was the damn God of Rock!

Berserk 90

@Artimo haley and Elvis did rockabilly or rock roll wich was combination of blues, swing and country music. but real rock came with blue cheer,Uriah heep, led zeppelin, black Sabbath and deep purple whose style was also heavily influenced by classical music and heavily influenced others. even classical music was influential in rock, and I'm talking not even started to Tal about the influence of classical music and British folk and church Chor music on blues and jazz, but that's never mentioned for some reason. I with this bands I mentioned it was real rock at the point because of the extensive use of the solid body electric guitar wich was essential and is the heart and the soul of rock.its a diffrent style of music compared to blues and rockabilly. that's a why I saying whites invented rock. and I will not allow that whites are dehumiized and erased from musical history. please understand sir.

@Ruben Avalos I'm the kind of idiot who was a dj back in the fifties. The kind of an idiot that was friends with Bill Haley, Big Joe Turner, Alan Freed, Bo Diddley and others. Yes, R'n'R was exactly what you said.....R'n'B uptempo with white commerciallisation......but it was different! You are very very wrong regarding Rocket 88. It was Jump Blues. Who said so? Well, Jackie Brenston and Ike Turner both said so. Now...please tell me why/how you and the countless other revisionists think you know more than the original artists...or were they just plain stupid? The other examples you mention are also not R'n'R...they are R'n'B.....similar but not the same.

Artimo

@Berserk 90 You are so wrong. I was a dj in the fifties. I was friends with Bill Haley, Big Joe Turner, Alan Freed and others. I saw Elvis perform live in '56. Haley was R'n'R not Rockabilly and this shows your ignorance. If Rock started with those you mentioned then what the hell was Elvis, Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly, Little Richard etc etc? You havnt a clue. You obviously have a white agenda so how about this....the King of R'n'R was Elvis. Regarded so by BLACKS and WHITES in the fifties. Alan Freed was King of the DJ's. Regarded so by BLACKS and WHITES in the fifties. Johnny Otis was regarded as the King of R'n'B. Regarded so by BLACKS and WHITES in the fifties. JOHNNY OTIS WAS WHITE!!!!!!. The most successful R'n'R/R'n'B songwriters were Leiber and Stoller. Regarded so by BLACKS and WHITES in the fifties. THESE WERE ALL WHITES. The modern drum kit, electric guitar, sax and piano were all invented by WHITES. So, it is clear that whites played a very important part in fifties R'n'R. This does not diminish black music which was the main source/inspiration for R'n'R...as much as 80%. No one invented R'n'R...it was a slow development influenced primarily by R'n'B but also by Blues, Hillbilly, Western Swing, Jazz, Gospel and even pop. Bill Haley was the lucky one who managed to get over the line first with a new musical form, closely followed by Elvis. So please let go of your white agenda and the same goes for others with a black agenda.

@Ruben Avalos real rock is traced trough the invention of the electric guitar wich whites invented. no electric guitar no rock. period!

@Cool Daddy what kind of idiot are you exactly? Everyone knows Rock N Roll was just R&B uptempo and crossing into white mainstream commercial markets. The artists who covered original R&B tunes sanitized the lyrics to censor the raunchy sex of R&B. Such as Bill Haley’s cover of Shake, Rattle, and Roll. Haley doesn’t sing Big Joe Turner’s “I can’t believe all that mess belongs to you” etc… I’ve heard arguably the first rock record was Ike Turner’s Rocket 88. Goree Carter’s Rock Awhile (1949) is probably truly the first. https://youtu.be/xZlESMXHFfY Though Bill Haley is early pioneer. It wasn’t until he used the rhythm and blues backbeat template he played Rock N Roll. Though Louis Jordan’s Ain’t That Like a Woman used those guitar licks early. Rock is traced through blues guitar, and swing and R&B.
