Congratulations
Cliff Richard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Congratulations
And celebrations
When I tell everyone that you're in love
With me
Congratulations
And jubilations
I want the world to know I'm happy as can be.
Who could believe that I could be happy and
Contented
I used to think that happiness hadn't been
Invented
But that was in the bad old days before
I met you
When I let you
Walk into my heart

Congratulations

I was afraid that maybe you thought you
Were above me
That I was only fooling myself to think you
Loved me
But then tonight you said you couldn't live
Without me
That round about me
You wanted to stay

Congratulations
Congratulations
And jubilations
I want the world to know I'm happy as can be

I want the world to know
I'm happy as can be

Overall Meaning

The song "Congratulations" is a jubilant expression of love and happiness. The lyrics open with the phrase "Congratulations and celebrations." This is a nod towards the conventional expressions of congratulations that we hear at weddings, graduations, and other important life events. However, the lyrics take a more personal turn as the singer declares that "I tell everyone that you're in love with me." This is an assertion of the singer's love for their partner, and their desire to share that love with the world.

The second verse reveals the singer's previous doubts about their ability to find happiness. The line "Who could believe that I could be happy and contented" speaks to a sense of disbelief that the singer feels. This disbelief is rooted in past experiences where happiness seemed unattainable. However, the singer's luck changed when they met their partner. The line "When I let you walk into my heart" suggests that the singer had to open themselves up to love, but once they did, they found true happiness.

The chorus repeats the words "Congratulations" and "jubilations," emphasizing the singer's joy and excitement. The final lines of the song convey the singer's desire to share their happiness with the world: "I want the world to know I'm happy as can be." This is a strong declaration of the singer's love, and a reminder to the audience that love is worth celebrating.

My late Mum was expecting me when this went out - she was such a Cliff fan she got so excited and much to my Dad's worry nearly had me that night by all accounts - I think that was a slight exaggeration as I arrived in July 1968 - but hey Cliff - you brought a lot of joy to my mum - and have done to me over my 52 years!

I love Cliff's 60's hits with the beautiful orchestral accompaniments; this is another with simple words that seem to hit you full on! - a lovely song.
