After independently releasing an extended play, Safety (1998), Coldplay signed with Parlophone in 1999. The band's debut album, Parachutes (2000), included their breakthrough single "Yellow" and received a Brit Award for British Album of the Year, a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album and a Mercury Prize nomination. Their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), won the same accolades and included "Clocks", which earned a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. In 2005, they released X&Y; the album was marked by a troubled production and various delays, completing what the band considered a trilogy as well. Coldplay's fourth effort, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), received a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album and their first Album of the Year nomination, while its title track was the first British group song to reach number-one in the United Kingdom and United States simultaneously in the 21st century. Both X&Y and Viva la Vida were the best-selling albums of their respective years, topping the charts in more than 30 countries each.
Since then, Coldplay further diversified their sound with the subsequent releases Mylo Xyloto (2011), Ghost Stories (2014), A Head Full of Dreams (2015), Everyday Life (2019) and Music of the Spheres (2021). Each album presented a unique theme and added new musical styles to the band's original repertoire, including electronica, ambient, pop, R&B, funk, classical, jazz fusion, and progressive rock. They are also known for "euphoric" live performances, which NME said are when the band "come alive and make the most sense". To celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2018, a career-spanning documentary directed by Mat Whitecross was premiered at selected cinemas, featuring previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage.
With 100 million albums sold worldwide, Coldplay are the most successful band of the 21st century and one of the best-selling music acts of all time. According to Fuse, they are also the sixth-most awarded group in history. Other notable achievements include the seventh-highest-grossing tour of all time, three of the 50 highest-selling albums ever in the United Kingdom, the most number-one records in the country without ever missing the top, most nominations and wins for a band in Brit Awards history, and becoming the first British group to debut at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100. Coldplay are considered one of the most influential bands of the 21st century as well, with Forbes describing them as the standard for the current alternative scene. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included A Rush of Blood to the Head on their "200 Definitive Albums" list and the single "Yellow" is part of their "Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll" exhibition for being one of the most successful and important recordings in the industry. In spite of their popularity and impact, Coldplay have earned a reputation as polarizing music icons.

And I come here to talk
I hope you understand
That green eyes
Yeah! the spotlight shines upon you
And how could anybody deny you
I came here with a load
And honey you should know
That I could never go on without you
Green eyes green eyes
Honey you are the sea upon which I float
And I came here to talk
I think you should know that green eyes
You're the one, that I wanted to find
And anyone who tried to deny you
Must be out of thΠ΅ir mind
Because I came hΠ΅re with a load
And it feels so much lighter, since I met you
And honey you should know
That I could never go on, without you!
Green eyes green eyes
Ooh ooh ooh ooh! Ooh ooh ooh ooh!
Ooh ooh ooh ooh!
Honey you are a rock upon which I stand
"Mooeie Ellebogen" jij hebt die hele mooie
Ellebogen, hele mooie ellebogen
Hele mooie ellebogen
Jij hebt die hele mooie ellebogen
Ik hou van jou ploem ploem ploem
(You have those very pretty
Elbows, very pretty elbows
Very pretty elbows
You have those very pretty elbows i love you
Ploom-ploom-ploom)
The song "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" by Coldplay (Boyce Avenue acoustic cover) is an anthem of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. The lyrics convey the message of turning to music as a form of escape, an activity that brings people together despite their differences. The singer of the song gets lost in the beats of their favorite song and the world outside doesn't matter anymore.
The second half of the song talks about how music can be a way to protest against social injustices. The lyrics convey the message of hoping that there will not be another generation of people who suffer from the same issues, rather than being a full stop. The singer is aware that life can be challenging but the music keeps their spirit alive. The song concludes with the idea that every tear that falls can be transformed into a waterfall, a life-giving river, and that a new dawn is always possible.

I turn the music up, I got my records on
I increase the volume of my music, and play my vinyl records
I shut the world outside until the lights come on
I block the outside world until it becomes dark outside
Maybe the streets alight, maybe the trees are gone
The streets may be illuminated, but the trees may have vanished
I feel my heart start beating to my favourite song
My heart begins to beat in time with the music I love
And all the kids they dance, all the kids all night
All the children dance through the entire night
Until Monday morning feels another life
When Monday arrives, it feels almost like a different existence
From underneath the rubble sing a rebel song
Amidst the destruction, a song of rebellion can be heard
Don't want to see another generation drop
I do not want to witness another generation die out
I'd rather be a comma than a full stop
I prefer to keep going, rather than coming to a complete halt
Maybe I'm in the black, maybe I'm on my knees
Perhaps I'm in financial debt, or maybe I'm feeling low
Maybe I'm in the gap between the two trapezes
I might be in a precarious, suspended position, uncertain of what comes next
But my heart is beating and my pulses start
Despite my uncertainty, my heart is still beating and I feel alive
Cathedrals in my heart
My heart is filled with cathedrals, majestic in their grandeur
As we saw oh this light I swear you, emerge blinking into
We witness this light, and you emerge from it blinking
To tell me it's alright
You assure me that everything is okay
As we soar walls, every siren is a symphony
When we overcome obstacles, even warning signals become beautiful music
And every tear's a waterfall
Each tear that falls from our eyes feels like a waterfall
Is a waterfall
It's like a waterfall
Oh
Expressing emotion and surprise
So you can hurt, hurt me bad
Others may cause me pain and distress
But still I'll raise the flag
Nevertheless, I will continue to fight and hold my ground
It was a wa wa wa wa wa-aterfall
A waterfall, represented by the sound of the word 'wa'
Every tear
Each time I cry
Every teardrop is a waterfall
Each tear seems like a cascade of water

Yeah, there's a litle slip up on it, but it's funny and I like that they did not edit it out. It's still a great version of a great song.
