You Make Me Feel
Cream Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You made me feel like a hat stand
All tall, grim and brown
You made me feel like a clothes horse
Old and left out in the rain

You sure say you can
But also I shared you with the others
I couldn't stand it

You made me feel like a deserted house
Dark and empty in the dusk
You made me feel like a charred foot
In a burnt out factory

You insist that I split
Cast me into the pit with the others
So many of them down there

Now it's so dark, dark, dark
Not a tiny spot of hope for me
Though I want you so much
That I need a crutch by the time you set me free

Now it's so dark, dark, dark
Not a tiny spot of hope for me
Though I want you so much
That I need a crutch by the time you set me free

You make me feel like a broken yellow yo-yo
Thrown away on a dump
You made me feel like a flower
Makin' way for a petrol pump

You ruined my days
With your poisoned ways
Like you did the others

So many others
Wonderin' down here
Hello man, how are things now?
Dark isn't it?

What a woman!
Wonder when she'll let us out?

Overall Meaning

In Cream's song "You Make Me Feel," the singer is lamenting about how their lover has made them feel like a variety of unpleasant objects. The similes used paint a picture of the singer feeling used, left behind, and discarded, as in the lyrics:

"You made me feel like a hat stand
All tall, grim, and brown
You made me feel like a clothes horse
Old and left out in the rain"

Through these objects, the singer is expressing how they have been neglected and made to feel unimportant, like an inanimate object used for the utility of others. The lyrics "You insist that I split / Cast me into the pit with the others / So many of them down there" paint a particularly bleak picture of the singer feeling abandoned and sent down into a pit with others who have been similarly mistreated.

The repetition of "Now it's so dark, dark, dark/ Not a tiny spot of hope for me / Though I want you so much / That I need a crutch by the time you set me free" shows that the singer is in a dire emotional state, longing for the freedom that their lover can provide but feeling trapped and hopeless.

Overall, the song portrays a deep sense of longing and unrequited love that is met with mistreatment and neglect. The objects used as similes drive home the sense that the singer feels unable to escape the role their lover has assigned them.

First time I heard Cream I was stoned out of my mind on LSD lying of the floor between two very large speakers, for 8 hours. These guys are the best musicians England ever produced. All Rock music after this was just was just imitation.
