Swinging On A Star
Crosby Bing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a mule

A mule is an animal with long funny ears
Kicks up at anything he hears
His back is brawny but his brain is weak
He's just plain stupid with a stubborn streak
And by the way, if you hate to go to school
You may grow up to be a mule

Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a pig

A pig is an animal with dirt on his face
His shoes are a terrible disgrace
He has no manners when he eats his food
He's fat and lazy and extremely rude
But if you don't care a feather or a fig
You may grow up to be a pig

Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a fish

A fish won't do anything, but swim in a brook
He can't write his name or read a book
To fool the people is his only thought
And though he's slippery, he still gets caught
But then if that sort of life is what you wish
You may grow up to be a fish

A new kind of jumped up slippery fish

And all the monkeys aren't in the zoo
Every day you meet quite a few
So you see it's all up to you

You can be better than you are
You could be swingin' on a star

Overall Meaning

The song "Swinging on a Star" by Bing Crosby was written by Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen in 1944. The lyrics of the song are a reflection on the choices one makes in life and the consequences that come with them. The song starts with a question that asks if the listener would like to swing on a star and carry moonbeams home in a jar. This is an allusion to the idea of reaching for something higher and more aspirational. The idea behind swinging on a star is to pursue something beyond one's current situation, which is a theme the song builds upon.

The song then goes on to present the listener with two options of animals they could be: a mule or a pig. The mule is a symbol of stubbornness and stupidity, while the pig is lazy and rude. The song is suggesting that if someone doesn't take control of their life, they will be nothing more than a dumb animal. The third option presented is a fish, which is even worse as it's the most passive of the animals mentioned in the song. However, as the lyrics suggest, it's all up to the listener to decide what they want to be and how they want to live their life.

Overall, the song "Swinging on a Star" is a cautionary tale that encourages people to aim high and to pursue their dreams. The song suggests that with hard work and determination, one can achieve greatness and become better than what they currently are. It's a timeless message that is still relevant today.

@@VirtuallyTenzin Some of the best aspirational lyrics ever.

@bowserbreaker2515

We would. But unfortunately, there hasn't been a Crosby or Sinatra in years.

My Grandma died today after years with living with dementia. This is my favourite memory of her. She used to sing this to me, sitting on her lap on the swing in her back garden :)

@maddisonwickett2072

I'm sorry for ur loss 👼🏼

@1.Specimen

Stephanie Gullon I hope my mind goes before my body, it's better that way in my opinion. My 93 year old grandfather has always been a strong man and now he is lucid and present and well aware of his body falling apart and breaking all the time and it just seems horrible.. I'd rather forget everything

@throe68

Stephanie Gullon Very cool of you to share such a precious moment...thanks

@fmason14fm

my dad died back in 2009 and before he did he used to sing this to me and my brothers
