His style is sometimes called samba-funk, and it incorporates many jazz, bossa nova, and hip hop elements as well. His first two albums, Achados e Perdidos and Japanpopshow, were released by ybmusic. On the thirtd, but pioneering Arrocha (Six Degrees Records), he has built upon prior success in creating a melodically addicting and rhythmically potent exploration of modern Brazil.
Discovered by California hip-hop outfit Blackalicious on a 2005 South American tour, the duo helped Curumin gain international recognition by releasing his debut, Achados e Perdidos, in the United States. After successfully launching his presence in the States at CMJ that same year, he was quickly booked to perform at Chicago's World Music Festival and the M3 Conference the following year. Natalie Portman included his track 'Tudo Bern Malandro' on a compilation; when 'Guerreiro' was used in a Nike ad during the FIFA World Cup, the fame he never sought was ensured.
It was Curumin's second album, JapanPopShow, that really launched him in 2008. His unique fusing of samba, reggae, electronica, funk and hip-hop earned him gigs at Central Park Summerstage, Los Angeles's Grand Performances, the Montreal Jazz Fest, the Red Hot Rio +2 concert at Brooklyn's BAM and San Francisco's Stern Grove. He's performed alongside Femi Kuti, Jorge Ben, Money Mark, Blackalicious and Juana Molina, and earned glowing accolades from the NY Times, Spin, the Village Voice and Billboard.com.
Part of a wave of evolutionary Brazilian artists updating their native soundscape, this self-professed tropicalia and funk addict now delves deeply into the electronic sound of his MPC to control the direction. 'I created different atmospheres and textures from doing a lot of research with all of the albums I have here in my house,' he says. Being that his home would not cater to a full band set-up, Arrocha dives right into the heart of his intentions: it's a warm, sensitive journey featuring gorgeous melodies floating over a wash of spacious percussion, guitars and bass, while never losing the danceable beats that his culture demands.

Pensamento tá dormente.
Vida inteira pela frente, câmbio, quadra,
Marcha, freio, oleozinho na corrente.
De camisa amarelinha, com a magrelinha invocada,
cisco no olho, olha a brincadeira, guidon torto,
e me esparramo pelos buracos e histórias.
Riso, sinto o mel na mente,
sangue doce da vida nas sementes.
Lindo e leve vou levando
com a cabeça fria e o pé quente
e o coração bombando,
bombando,
bombando,
bombando,
bombando...
Acendendo as idéias,
(Ah) põe sebo nas canelas.
É fever na Magrela!
É fever na Magrela!
Acendendo as idéias,
(Ah) põe sebo nas canelas.
É fever na Magrela!
É fever na Magrela!
Acendendo as idéias,
(Ah) põe sebo nas canelas.
É fever na Magrela!
É fever na Magrela!
Acendendo as idéias,
(Ah) põe sebo nas canelas.
É fever na Magrela!
É fever na Magrela!
Magrela Fever by Curumin is a fun, upbeat song that celebrates the joy of living in the moment and embracing life's adventures. The lyrics describe the singer's experience of riding his bike, or "Magrela", through the streets with a carefree attitude. He seems to have no particular destination in mind, but is simply enjoying the freedom and excitement of the ride.
The opening lines of the song express a feeling of restlessness and a desire to get moving: "Eu me coço e saio fora / Pensamento tá dormente" (I scratch myself and get out / My mind is dormant). The singer is eager to escape the monotony of daily life ("Vida inteira pela frente / Câmbio, quadra / Marcha, freio, oleozinho na corrente" - I have my whole life ahead of me / Gears, block / Clutch, brake, oil on the chain). He puts on his yellow shirt and sets off on his bike, ready for whatever comes his way.
As he rides through the streets, the singer encounters obstacles and challenges ("cisco no olho, olha a brincadeira, guidon torto, roda amassada" - dust in my eye, look at this game, handlebars bent, wheel dented). Yet he remains undeterred and continues on his journey with a sense of humor and optimism: "vou de qualquer maneira!" (I'm going no matter what!). The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "É fever na Magrela!" (It's fever on the Magrela!), which seems to suggest a sense of euphoria or exhilaration that comes from this kind of carefree adventure.
Overall, Magrela Fever is a joyful, playful song that celebrates the simple pleasures of life. It encourages listeners to embrace their sense of adventure and to approach each day with a spirit of excitement and optimism.
