It began in 2001 as the project for Dan Whitford. In 2003, Whitford recruited a band, and in 2005 toured internationally for the first time, visiting London, New York and Los Angeles. They have played with international acts Franz Ferdinand, TV on the Radio, Pretty Girls Make Graves and Junior Senior, amongst others. Cut Copy is signed to the record label Modular in Sydney.
In 2004, Cut Copy released their debut album Bright Like Neon Love. The music is written and produced by frontman Dan Whitford, who is also a graphic designer and DJ. Cut Copy released three singles from this album: "Saturdays," "Future," and "Going Nowhere."
They also released a Fabriclive album featuring a mix of several synth/retro/elektropop songs such as (for example) MSTRKRFT and New Young Pony Club.
Their second album, In Ghost Colours, was released in 2008. Four singles were issued: "So Haunted," "Hearts on Fire," "Lights and Music," and "Far Away."
In 2011, Cut Copy released their third album, Zonoscope, which included the singles "Where I'm Going," "Take Me Over," and "Need You Now." Zonoscope marked the addition of bassist and synthesist Ben Browning to the Cut Copy lineup, making the group a four-piece. Browning had previously supported the band as a touring musician throughout the In Ghost Colours Tour.

(Above the City)
Cut Copy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No, I said was above the city as opposed to walking
Has this ever happened to you before?
No, I said was above the city as opposed to walking
Has this ever happened to you before?
No, I said was above the city as opposed to walking
Has this ever happened to you before?
No, I said was above the city as opposed to walking
The lyrics to Cut Copy's "Above the City" seem to be exploring the idea of being disconnected from reality and experiencing something out of the ordinary. The repeated question "Has this ever happened to you before?" suggests that the singer is trying to make sense of their own experience and possibly share it with someone else. The response "No, I said was above the city as opposed to walking" reinforces the idea that this experience was otherworldly, perhaps even supernatural.
The idea of being "above the city" suggests a sense of detachment from the mundane world below, and a feeling of being elevated to a higher plane of existence. This could be interpreted as a spiritual experience or simply a temporary escape from the stresses of everyday life. The repetition of the phrase "as opposed to walking" reinforces the idea of being in a different state of being altogether.
Overall, the lyrics to "Above the City" suggest a yearning for something greater than our everyday reality, and an exploration of the possibility of experiencing something beyond our normal comprehension. The song invites the listener to consider the meaning of their own experiences and question the boundaries of what we consider to be possible.

This is why we won’t delay for your birthday
The secrets that we held that day will be kept straight
All your friends have gone away, so let's celebrate
You're holding hope open for the one making you wait
Lights and Music
Are on my mind
Be my baby
One more time
Lights and Music
Are on my mind
Be my baby
One more time
Fading with the color you see in my face
Cold and crystal you can't hide as your tears race
I'll be waiting by in time; put your dreams away
You're holding hope open for the one making you wait
Lights and Music
Are on my mind
Be my baby
One more time
