It began in 2001 as the project for Dan Whitford. In 2003, Whitford recruited a band, and in 2005 toured internationally for the first time, visiting London, New York and Los Angeles. They have played with international acts Franz Ferdinand, TV on the Radio, Pretty Girls Make Graves and Junior Senior, amongst others. Cut Copy is signed to the record label Modular in Sydney.
In 2004, Cut Copy released their debut album Bright Like Neon Love. The music is written and produced by frontman Dan Whitford, who is also a graphic designer and DJ. Cut Copy released three singles from this album: "Saturdays," "Future," and "Going Nowhere."
They also released a Fabriclive album featuring a mix of several synth/retro/elektropop songs such as (for example) MSTRKRFT and New Young Pony Club.
Their second album, In Ghost Colours, was released in 2008. Four singles were issued: "So Haunted," "Hearts on Fire," "Lights and Music," and "Far Away."
In 2011, Cut Copy released their third album, Zonoscope, which included the singles "Where I'm Going," "Take Me Over," and "Need You Now." Zonoscope marked the addition of bassist and synthesist Ben Browning to the Cut Copy lineup, making the group a four-piece. Browning had previously supported the band as a touring musician throughout the In Ghost Colours Tour.

(The Waves)
Cut Copy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Rushing again and just splashing on the rocks
Sort of, sort of a spacial experience that
invokes emotion in me
Makes me think about things in a way that I can't express
And I'm not sure what it is, but it's something that I can feel
It's like the waves are a physical manifestation of some sort of energy
And I just can't help but be drawn to it
The simplicity of it all, yet the complexity it embodies
The lyrics in Cut Copy's "The Waves" describe the power and beauty of nature, specifically the waves crashing against the rocks. The imagery of the waves is used to evoke a sense of wonder and awe in the listener, as the waves are presented as a seemingly physical manifestation of an unseen energy. The singer expresses a feeling of being drawn towards the waves, despite not fully understanding what this energy is or how to express it. Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of reverence and respect for the natural world, and the emotions it can stir within us.

This is why we won’t delay for your birthday
The secrets that we held that day will be kept straight
All your friends have gone away, so let's celebrate
You're holding hope open for the one making you wait
Lights and Music
Are on my mind
Be my baby
One more time
Lights and Music
Are on my mind
Be my baby
One more time
Fading with the color you see in my face
Cold and crystal you can't hide as your tears race
I'll be waiting by in time; put your dreams away
You're holding hope open for the one making you wait
Lights and Music
Are on my mind
Be my baby
One more time
Lights and Music
Are on my mind
Be my baby
