He founded, in 1971, the recognized independent record label Ayuí/Tacuabé in order to promote and support valuable Uruguayan musical expressions, along with other musicians like José "Pepe" Guerra, Braulio López, Coriún Aharonián, Myriam Dibarboure, María Teresa Sande and Edgardo Bello,
He has performed the works of Cuban Nueva Trova stars Silvio Rodríguez and Pablo Milanés and Brazil's Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo and has worked with Cuban composer and arranger Leo Brouwer. His recordings are widely available, especially "Trópicos" (1972).
Viglietti was imprisoned in 1972 by his own government. He was supported by the likes of Jean-Paul Sartre as an international man of conscience, a voice for peace, and an opponent of the fascism and tyranny that plagued South America in the 1970s. Rumors about possible mistreatment against him forced the authorities to bring him out in front of television cameras to show that, in particular, his hands were fine. However, Viglietti spoke out that his treatment in police custody was much better than what other political prisoners received. He was a peer of the late Chilean poet and folk singer Victor Jara and composer and activist Violeta Parra.
La Canción De Pablo

Si yo he sido, dónde estoy
Compañera vendrán a preguntar otra vez
Si me ha visto, si le escribo
Si usted sabe adónde fue su marido
(Usted los mira a los ojos
Con ternura va pensando:
Pablo es un hombre que sabe
Que la vida está cambiando
Los compañeros lo llevan
Hacia el alba caminando
Y si le ponen cadenas
Irán otros brazos por libertad)
Pablos hay muchos y andando
Por la tierra van cantando
Con sus banderas de trigo
De pan y de vino, van luchando
Pablos hay muchos y andando
Por la tierra van cantando
In Daniel Viglietti's song "La Cancion de Trilce," the lyrics depict a conversation between companions, where they discuss the singer, Pablo. They speculate on his whereabouts and his actions, while also reflecting on his character and ideals.
In the first paragraph, the companion anticipates others coming to inquire about Pablo. They wonder if he has been involved in something significant and where he might be. The companion, looking up and contemplating, envisions Pablo traveling through the land, proudly waving a flag made of wheat, bread, and wine. They believe that Pablo is on a mission to enlighten people about freedom and liberation.
In the second paragraph, the companion presumes that people will continue searching for Pablo. They believe that a picture or a letter may help in finding his trail. The companion recalls Pablo's hands and starts daydreaming. They imagine Pablo venturing out into a sea of youthful blood, navigating with a rebellious spirit, struggling without basic necessities like bread and wine. Pablo's heart is depicted as that of a guerrilla, fighting for what he believes in, and in the streets, he forgets his solitude.
In the third paragraph, the companion expects people to return once again, asking if they have encountered Pablo or received any communication from him. The companion, looking into their eyes with tenderness, contemplates the questions. They assert that Pablo is a man who understands that life is changing. He is being led towards a new dawn by his comrades, and even if he is imprisoned, other arms will rise for the cause of freedom.
The final paragraph serves as a refrain in the song and makes a broader statement. It suggests that there are many Pablos in the world, who continue singing and fighting as they journey through the land. These Pablos carry banners made of wheat, bread, and wine, symbolizing sustenance and nourishment. They continue to struggle for a better world, reflecting the resilience and determination of individuals dedicated to their ideals.
Overall, "La Cancion de Trilce" emphasizes the importance of individuals like Pablo, who dedicate themselves to advocating for change and fighting for freedom. It highlights the collective efforts of the companions and the myriad Pablos who continue to strive for a better future.
