She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snow white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her mama and her daddy
With the baby in the backseat
Fifty miles to go and she was running low
On faith and gasoline
It'd been a long hard year
She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention
She was going away too fast
And before she knew
She was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both her lives flash before her eyes
She didn't even had time to crash
She was so scared she threw her hands up in the air

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
So Jesus take the wheel

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat
Sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So from know on tonight

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
So Jesus take the wheel

Ooh Jesus take the wheel
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Just save me from this road I'm on
From this road I'm on

So Jesus take the wheel
Oh take it

Overall Meaning

The first verse sets the stage for this story, recounting how a woman is driving on a snowy Christmas Eve with her baby in the back seat. She's on her way to see her parents, but she's tired and "running low on faith and gasoline," having had a tough year. Despite having a lot on her mind, she's not paying enough attention to the road and is going too fast. Suddenly, she loses control of the car, spinning out on a thin black sheet of ice. She realizes in that moment that she's about to crash, and throws her hands up in the air, desperate for help.

The chorus begins with her invoking Jesus to take the wheel and help her on this dangerous journey. She's admitting that she can't do it on her own and needs his help. She's "letting go" of her worries and fears and putting her trust in him to guide her to safety. She begs for one more chance and for him to save her from the road she's on.

The second verse describes how, after the car comes to a stop, the woman sees her baby sleeping peacefully in the back seat and feels a wave of emotion. For the first time in a long time, she bows her head and prays, acknowledging that she needs to change her ways of living. She's sorry for the choices she's made and wants to start fresh from that very moment. She once again calls on Jesus to take the wheel and steer her in the right direction. The song ends with her saying "I'm letting go" one more time, fully handing over control to him.
