With her multifaceted acting career and some incredible theatre projects ahead of her, Rubin-Vega's latest endeavor is REDEMPTION SONGS (Sh-K-Boom Records), a much-anticipated collection of original and diversely classic songs.
"Some of these songs were written when I experienced deep losses and incredible firsts. I was inspired to write again. It was a very 'fertile' time for creativity," says Rubin-Vega. The result developed into a form of personal redemption; a vibrant and sophisticated collection of pop, Latin folk, rock and reggae influenced songs that are soulful, passionate and very reflective of Rubin-Vega herself.
As a child, Daphne moved to NYC's Greenwich Village from Panama. It was in the center of this bohemia that Daphne discovered her passion for music and performing.
"I was in the seventh grade when almost overnight I realized I was quite popular with the girls in school, and my house was turning into the hot after school hang out," Rubin-Vega recalls. "It didn't take long to figure out that it was because my brothers' band played in the basement almost every afternoon," she added. "Shortly thereafter, I started glomming the mic and singing lead."
In her teens, Daphne found herself at an Atlantic Studios vocal session begging legendary producer Arif Mardin to let her sing with David Bowie on the soundtrack to George Lucas' film, "Labyrinth." After attending a birthday party for Mardin’s son Joe, she listed all the celebrated singers in her resume; having sung "happy birthday" with them. With that credit under her belt, she joined Pajama Party, the girl group with the infamous freestyle single, "Yo No Se." She recorded two albums on Atlantic Records with the group before going solo to write and record singles for the indie club label, Maxi. Her single, "I Found It" topped the Billboard Dance and Club Play charts. At the same time, the LAByrinth Theater Company was founded and she became an early member.
In 1997, Daphne Rubin-Vega cut her first album of original music, SOUVENIRS for Polygram's now defunct Mercury label. It was the fans of this album that she credits for getting her band started. Fate also intervened in the form of Joan Jett, her co-star and roommate during Rubin-Vega's run as Magenta in 2000's The Rocky Horror Show. "She basically told me to stop bitching, get up off my ass and start a band," says Rubin-Vega. "So I did."
Rubin-Vega went on to play straight-laced detective Gloria Perez in the camp-noir thriller "Wild Things," starring Kevin Bacon and Matt Dillon, for which she won a Blockbuster Award for Best Supporting Actress/Suspense. Other film credits include Robert De Niro's love interest Tia, in the film "Flawless" and her award-winning performance of Olya in the indie cult feature "Skeleton Woman."
Daphne's 2003 role as Canary Mary in Susan Lori Parks' Fucking A at the Public Theater got her a Lucille Lortel Best Featured Actress nomination, and in 2004, Rubin-Vega received her second Tony nomination for best featured actress (play) for her role as Conchita in Nilo Cruz' Pulitzer Prize winning Anna in the Tropics with Jimmy Smits.
Rubin-Vega is preparing for the end of a very busy year. This April, she ended her run as Martirio in Bernarda Alba at Lincoln Center. In September, she finished her star turn in The New Group's summer 2006 production of Everythings Turning Into Beautiful.
In October, the same month as the release of REDEMPTION SONGS, Rubin-Vega will play Fantine in the Broadway revival of Les Miserables.
In January 2007, she will star with Academy Award winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman in The Public Theater/LAByrinth production of Bob Glaudini's Jack Goes Boating.

Another Day
Daphne Rubin-Vega Lyrics
Jump to: Line by Line Meaning ↴
Barging in on me and my guitar
Little girl, hey
The door is that way
You better go you know
The fire's out anyway
Take your powder, take your candle
Well, take your hair in the moonlight
Your brown eyes, goodbye, goodnight
I should tell you, I should tell you
I should tell you, I should, no
Another time, another place
Out temperature would climb
There'd be a long embrace
We'd do another dance
It'd be another play
Looking for romance
Come back another day
Another day
The heart may freeze or it can burn
The pain will ease if I can learn
There is no future, there is no past
I live this moment as my last
There's only us, there's only this
Forget regret or life is yours to miss
No other road, no other way
No day but today
Excuse me if I'm off track
But if you're so wise
Then tell me
Why do you need smack?
Take your needle
Take your fancy prayer
And don't forget
Get the moonlight out of your hair
Long ago you might've lit up my heart
But the fire's dead, ain't never ever gonna start
Another time, another place
The words would only rhyme
We'd be in outer space
It'd be another song
We'd sing another way
You wanna prove me wrong?
Come back another day
Another day
There's only yes
Only tonight we must let go
To know what's right
No other course, no other way
No day but today
I can't control (Control your temper)
My destiny (She doesn't see)
I trust my soul (Who says that there's a soul)
My only goal
Is just to be (Just let me be)
There's only now (Who do you think you are)
There's only here
Give into love (Barging in on me)
Or live in fear (And my guitar)
No other past (Little girl hey)
No other way (The door is that way)
No day but today (The fires out anyway)
No day but today (Take your powder)
(Take your candle)
No day but today
(Take your brown eyes, your pretty smile, your silhouette)
No day but today
(Another time, another place, another rhyme, a warm embrace)
No day but today
(Another dance, another way, another chance, another day)
No day but today
Who do you think you are?
You're intruding on me and my personal space, and I'm questioning your audacity.
Barging in on me and my guitar
Interrupting my solitude while I'm playing my guitar.
Little girl, hey
I'm dismissing your presence with a condescending term.
The door is that way
You should leave now, that's the direction you should go.
You better go you know
It would be in your best interest to leave.
The fire's out anyway
Our passion and connection have faded away.
Take your powder, take your candle
Remove yourself and all the romantic gestures you bring.
Your sweet whisper, I just can't handle
I cannot bear the thought of your affectionate words anymore.
Well, take your hair in the moonlight
Don't bring your dazzling appearance and captivating charm.
Your brown eyes, goodbye, goodnight
Bid farewell to your enticing brown eyes, it's time to part.
I should tell you, I should tell you
There's something important I should disclose to you.
I should tell you, I should, no
However, I choose not to reveal it after all.
Another time, another place
In a different circumstance or location.
Out temperature would climb
Our passion and desire for each other would intensify.
There'd be a long embrace
We would share a prolonged and affectionate hug.
We'd do another dance
We would engage in another intimate dance together.
It'd be another play
Our relationship would be like another theatrical performance.
Looking for romance
Searching for love and affection.
Come back another day
Return on a different occasion.
The heart may freeze or it can burn
One's heart can experience emotional detachment or passionate intensity.
The pain will ease if I can learn
If I can acquire knowledge or understanding, the pain will lessen.
There is no future, there is no past
We should focus on the present moment without concerning ourselves with the future or dwelling on the past.
I live this moment as my last
I embrace each moment as if it were my final one.
There's only us, there's only this
The only important existence is the connection between us and the present moment.
Forget regret or life is yours to miss
If we dwell on past mistakes, we will miss out on the opportunities life presents.
No other road, no other way
There are no alternatives or choices to be made.
No day but today
The only significant day is today, in the present.
Excuse me if I'm off track
I apologize if I'm deviating from the expected path of conversation.
But if you're so wise
If you possess such wisdom or knowledge.
Then tell me
Please enlighten me with an answer.
Why do you need smack?
Why do you have an addiction to drugs like smack?
Take your needle
Get rid of your drug paraphernalia.
Take your fancy prayer
Let go of your pretentious and empty religious practices.
And don't forget
Also remember to eliminate
Get the moonlight out of your hair
Remove any traces of romantic illusions from your mind.
Long ago you might've lit up my heart
In the past, you may have brought joy and happiness into my life.
But the fire's dead, ain't never ever gonna start
However, the passion and connection between us have permanently extinguished.
The words would only rhyme
If we were together in another time and place, our conversation would be harmonious.
We'd be in outer space
We would experience a state of euphoria and ecstasy.
It'd be another song
Our relationship would be expressed through another musical creation.
We'd sing another way
Our love would be expressed differently, with a new approach.
You wanna prove me wrong?
Do you have the desire to prove me mistaken?
Come back another day
Return on a different occasion.
There's only yes
There's no room for hesitation or doubt.
Only tonight we must let go
We must release all inhibitions and live in the present moment.
To know what's right
In order to understand the correct path or decision.
No other course, no other way
There are no alternate routes or choices to consider.
No day but today
There is only today, the present moment that matters.
I can't control (Control your temper)
I don't have the power to manipulate or dictate (Keep your emotions in check)
My destiny (She doesn't see)
The outcome of my life that is beyond my control (Her lack of awareness prevents her from understanding)
I trust my soul (Who says that there's a soul)
I have faith in my inner self (Some people deny the existence of a soul)
My only goal
My singular objective
Is just to be (Just let me be)
Is simply to exist as I am (Allow me to live without interference)
There's only now (Who do you think you are)
There is only the present moment (You're arrogantly imposing on me)
There's only here
There is only the current location or situation
Give into love (Barging in on me)
Surrender to love (Invading my personal space without permission)
Or live in fear (And my guitar)
Otherwise, live in a state of apprehension (Referring to my personal source of solace)
No other past (Little girl hey)
There is no previous time or history (Dismissing her presence with a condescending term)
No other way (The door is that way)
There are no different options or alternatives (The exit is in that direction)
No day but today (The fire's out anyway)
There is only today, the present moment that matters (Our passion has faded regardless)
No day but today (Take your powder)
There is only today, the present moment that matters (Take your drugs and leave)
(Take your candle)
(Take your romantic gestures)
No day but today
There is only today, the present moment that matters
(Take your brown eyes, your pretty smile, your silhouette)
(Remove all traces of your enticing appearance)
No day but today
There is only today, the present moment that matters
(Another time, another place, another rhyme, a warm embrace)
(In a different circumstance or location, with different poetic elements, a loving embrace)
No day but today
There is only today, the present moment that matters
(Another dance, another way, another chance, another day)
(Another opportunity to dance, another approach, another opportunity for love, another day)
No day but today
There is only today, the present moment that matters
