When real life's getting more
Like fiction each day
Headlines, bread lines
Blow my mind
And now this deadline
"Eviction or pay"
Rent
How do you write a song
When the chords sound wrong
Though they once sounded right and rare
When the notes are sour
Where is the power
You once had to ignite the air
We're hungry and frozen
Some life that we've chosen
How we gonna pay
How we gonna pay
How we gonna pay
Last year's rent
How do you start a fire
When there's nothing to burn
And it feels like something's stuck in your flue
How can you generate heat
When you can't feel your feet
And they're turning blue
You light up a mean blaze
With posters
And screenplays
How we gonna pay
How we gonna pay
How we gonna pay
Last year's rent
How do you stay on your feet
When on every street
It's 'trick or treat'
And tonight its 'trick'
'Welcome back to town'
I should lie down
Everything's brown
And uh oh
I feel sick
Where is he?
Getting dizzy
How we gonna pay
How we gonna pay
How we gonna pay
Last year's rent
The music ignites the night with passionate fire
The narration crackles and pops with incendiary wit
Zoom in as they burn the past to the ground
And feel the heat of the future's glow
How do you leave the past behind
When it keep finding ways to get to your heart
It reaches way down deep and tears you inside out
'Til you're torn apart
Rent
How can you connect in an age
Where strangers, landlords, lovers
Your own blood cells betray
What binds the fabric together
When the raging, shifting winds of change
Keep ripping away
Draw a line in the sand
And then make a stand
Use your camera to spar
Use your guitar
When they act tough
You call their bluff
We're not gonna pay
We're not gonna pay
We're not gonna pay
Last year's rent
This year's rent
Next year's rent
Rent rent rent rent rent
We're not gonna pay rent
'Cause everything is rent
The song "Rent" by Fredi Walker is a poignant reflection on the struggles of living in the real world and the challenges of making ends meet. The lyrics depict the increasing resemblance of real life to fiction, with sensational news headlines and the constant threat of eviction due to financial difficulties. The opening lines emphasize the overwhelming nature of these circumstances, with the singer's mind being blown by the harsh reality of not being able to afford the rent.
The song also delves into the creative struggles faced by the artist. The question of how to write a song when the chords no longer sound right and the notes are sour reflects a loss of inspiration and creative power. The lyrics convey a sense of frustration and defeat, with the inability to generate heat and passion in their art paralleling the numbness and coldness felt in their feet.
The second half of the song shifts to exploring the challenges of personal relationships and the difficulty of leaving the past behind. The line about the past finding ways to get to the heart reveals the persistent emotional impact of past experiences. The song suggests that in an age of constant change and betrayal, finding connections becomes increasingly challenging.
Overall, "Rent" is a powerful commentary on the struggles and hardships faced by individuals in contemporary society, particularly in relation to financial burdens, creative endeavors, and personal relationships.

It won’t work
I look before I leap
I love margins and discipline
I make lists in my sleep, baby
What’s my sin?
Never quit, I follow through
I hate mess, but I love you
What to do with my impromptu, baby
So be wise
'Cause this girl satisfies
You got a prize, so don’t compromise
You’re one lucky baby

Idina looks so delightfully trashy. I miss the 90s. Thank you for uploading. Just incredible!

A lot of people may love the movie version more, but I'm sorry...this version was the IT version for me. I don't know...it felt more raw, angry, stressed, and sexy! The movie version was a cute breakup compared to this rougher, angrier, serious version!!! I Live For It!!!
@mauvebassetgirl21
OnceUponATimeAddict Same I thought she was actually holding back in the movie. Idina's range is much broader than the film adaption represents

I can think of a few reasons why people would like the movie version more. First, Idina Menzel, in my opinion, sounds better in the movie version. Her technique in the movie has smoothed out from the rasps and whispers of 1996 (the cast recording was clearly recorded on a bad day for her). Another is a matter of Tracie Thoms vs. Freddi Walker. I like both of their performances, but I perfer Tracie's brighter sound. But yhe biggest reason for me is that both actresses miss a few notes in Every. Single. Recording. Try to find a performance of Idina and Freddi doing this song where they hit the note at 3:29 head on.
@Mia_M
Well in the movie, she doesn't have to be as theatrical because people can see her face. On Broadway, you can't always see their faces because of distance so your voice has to do all the acting.
@cysticcrystal2998
OnceUponATimeAddict you said it perfectly! that’s so true. in this version it’s like...you feel that you’re in the situation with them. the poverty of Mark of Roger, the anger of Maureen and Joanne, the heartbreak when Angel dies. it feels very authentic and raw I love it! the movie is, well, a movie, and while i love how they were able to do so much detail with it since it was film, I love the stage version’s raw emotions
@smallsignals
The timing is is very problematic. I’m over-looking the melody issues because microphones weren’t as great back then and they’re on pitch. It just seems to be short three-note runs that are lost. But their timing in the verses isn’t affected by the mic.
@AiyanaWolfe
wow...Idina sounds so different now

Aiyana Land she sounds like she has a cold in this video
