I will agree with Dr. Hatch in one thing. "We should only care about what Heavenly Father says about us--that we are of immense worth."

That is absolutely true. So, if anything in this talk or any other source makes you doubt your eternal worth or the love that your Heavenly Parents have for you, you should disregard it. Listen to your Heavenly Parents and the Healer, Jesus Christ.

And what They say is that you are loved and you are divine. They long for you to feel Their Heavenly embrace exactly as you are now. You don't need to change for Them to love you. They love you right now, in this moment, no matter what.

As President Monson once said, "God's love is there for you whether or not you feel you deserve love. It is simply always there."

I know those who are LGBTQIA+ and their family members and friends who were in attendance or have since listened to the talk were deeply hurt by some of the things said. Remember that God created you as you are. We often hear that God doesn't make mistakes--and I believe that. So if God created you and loves you, you don't have to believe anyone that says you are a mistake or that you have to pretend to be something other than what God created you to be. Trust your heavenly parents. Listen to Them. Trust yourself. You are divine.

Like I get what he is saying life just gets more complicated and health fails and loved ones pass. In that sense yeah I see what he is saying. But I wouldn't trade my life now for my life then.

So to call it worse I dunno but I guess that's my experience and others might have a different view from a different experience.

Overall I enjoyed the talk. I'm glad he shared his insights and the restored gospel of jesus christ. Thought he did good. I'm glad it's him up there and not me and I give him props for that especially in today's climate. That would be a hard pass for me so kudos to him for having the courage to get up and testify of the plan of happiness especially when we're all content in our misery.

I dunno why everyone trippin this is the doctrine of Christ and in alignment with lds theology. Suppose the doctrine of christ is a stumbling block for many. But u gotta fall if you want to be lifted up by the master in the last days.

As an evangelical Christian I found this very interesting -- and was pleasantly surprised. Blessed, actually. Which sort of has me wondering at the number of seemingly LDS who had issues with it.

Typically when I listen to these I'm expecting to hear some token use of Biblical scripture which is then put into service of some BofM stuff and ends up saying how great Joseph Smith and the restored "church" is, ending with the obligatory imprimatur of, "I-testify-that-I-know-the-church-is-true".

But here -- although there is certainly overlap between the Biblical and the LDS -- I mostly heard Biblical Truth. !!!!

From 29:00 - 31:44 we have:

"The ultimate lying liar who will stop at nothing to separate us from God. He knows exactly which version of "jesus" His tactics have not evolved at all -- they are exactly as they always have been. The great deceiver's speciality is his keen interest in your feelings and opinions and personal preferences. He knows exactly which version of 'jesus' is pertinent to your cause. The deceiver dishes out a new gospel and I .. do hate this ... the gospel of your own truth. That's just how stealthily and insiduously the father of lies leads members of this church astray. He distorts God's Word, and presents new different gospel to each generation, and he knows how to place deceit in our hearts. He's well acquainted with our carnal desire to rule ourselves, and he's happy to show us how."

And I'm thinking to myself -- LOL -- here we have an LDS speaker talking about the "ultimate lying liar" who " ... knows exactly which version of 'jesus' is pertinent to your cause" and " ... distorts God's Word, and presents new different gospel to each generation, and he knows how to place deceit in our hearts" .

And I'm thinking, WHERE was this guy when the "ultimate lying liar" was doing his number on Joseph Smith to create one of his finest counterfeits of Christanity through an occult treasure seeker. The description could not be more apropo! LOL!

But -- truth be told -- everything he said was in line with the Biblical view of the nature, person, and work of the Biblical Satan. As an evangelical Christian, laying aside all the trappings of LDS views of "god" Dr. Hatch was Biblically spot-on.

But THEN we come to 31:44 - 33:05

"He wants to thwart God's kingdom and purposes and plans. He wants to hurt the people God creates and loves. He wants to wreak havoc on those who are chosen by discouraging disarming and derailing us. He wants to confuse people and lead them away from the truth of who God is. He wants to kill and destroy the soul of every man, woman and child. But guess what? We don't have to be duped. Jesus told His disciples ... Matthew 24:4 Take heed that no man deceive you. This warning is applicable to every Biblical topic and all aspects of our daily Christian walk. There's only one way to prevent the great deceiver from having great influence in our lives. We must focus on Jesus, the Christ, His Truth, His Words and The Gospel he came to proclaim and die for so that you and I would never again be separated from God."

And I'm thinking to myself, "Holy Moly!" (well - so speak ... but ...)

Everything that he just said was completely in line with Biblical Christianity! You could throw the Book of Mormon, D & C, Pearl of Great Price, and all the LDS temples into the sea and not diminish one iota the Truth of what he said !

And I'm thinking, this guy isn't just an LDS -- he's actually a Christian ! :-)

And then I'm thinking -- praise God! AMEN, Brother Hatch! God BLESS you, brother! Hallelulah! :-) :-) :-)

Dr. Hatch spoke much Biblical Truth in his words.

And it has me wondering -- is that why there is such a great amount of negative response?

Could that be rather telling about those who are responding thusly?

When such a message of Bibilical Truth generates that much of that response, to me it speaks volumes about those having that reaction.

It makes me wonder if the Presence of The Truth is shining The Light on that which is false.

In any case, I feel compelled to re-state what, to me are not only some of the best words I've heard in some time, but likely the best possible words anyone could hear -- for all time. Let those who have ears to hear, hear this:

There's only one way to prevent the great deceiver from having great influence in our lives. We must focus on Jesus, the Christ, His Truth, His Words and The Gospel he came to proclaim and die for so that you and I would never again be separated from God.

AMEN!

If you're LDS and you have a problem receiving that, you may want to consider whether you really have placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior.

PS. Dr. Hatch was being very kind and respectful towards the piano -- it is rare to find a suitable instrument at such lecture sites which can accommodate an artist of his talents. But in all fairness, it did not quite accomodate all this artist is capable of. There are a number of Youtube videos available which I recommend you watch to appreciate this man's God-given, and humanly-stewarded Gifts!

PPS -- I do find it annoying how he drops his right hand wrist way below the keyboard level so often -- why? Given an otherwise excellent technic ... ?

While we are speaking on offensive talks, let's ask why a man who has said that people who marry a black person are committing a sin (and he even implied execution by beheading as a retribution for that) now has four universities including this one named after him. Plus this university is in a place that is majority minority and has a rate of mixed marriages at 33%. That was then but this is now?? What about the Aaronic Priesthood Manual 3 chapter 31, page 128??? That is still posted on the official church website and was still in use as recently as 2017. These universities need to be renamed the same way Porteus Hall at UH-Manoa was renamed. No one needs that kind of legacy in a place of aloha.

Wonderful talk, just masterfully put together. Every one of his words truly speaks to my mother heart. The only thing i hope for my children is for them to know who they are, their divine identity, and to love and have a relationship with Jesus Christ. The topic of how Satan works to deceive comes up a lot in our family scripture study. Jesus Christ is the truth! This is what he said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." By no other way can we enter into the presence of God and feel His love.

He has a beautiful life with a wife and children. Even if he did have a natural inclination toward homosexuality he chose instead to follow God’s commandments and live the higher and more fulfilling law, which granted him children, the greatest blessing on this earth. You missed the word “might.” The point of the quote was to show that people choose to idolize celebrities because of their fame and beauty. But we don’t really know them at all. Why aim to idolize someone who MIGHT be “spiritually cripple” and a terrible example, when you can follow the perfect example of the Savior? He’s not suggesting that we judge someone’s spirituality. He’s warning us about putting our faith and trust in the arm of flesh.

My good neighbor is a minor attracted person and once acted upon those feelings. After being tried and convicted and being released from jail he has fought to not act upon those feelings and been successful for many years.

I’m not equating the two but all of the same arguments are also currently being applied to minor attracted persons: “it’s okay if you’re born that way” “live your truth” “be your authentic self”, etc. and the ‘+’ sign at the end of LGBTQIA+ includes minor attracted persons and any other propensity to any other types of sexualism such as zoophilia, polyandry, etc. as something that should be acceptable even embraced and celebrated by the secular world.

Our Heavenly Parents are a Father and a Mother. The only kind of union where exaltation or eternal life is possible. The same eternal pattern established with Adam and Eve. God did not "create" same-sex attraction or gender dysphoria. These are products of the Fall and will be remedied in the resurrection. Homosexual relationships are a literal dead end and that's why they have no part in the Plan of Salvation. Those who struggle with these things have the same promises, provided they keep the commandments and their covenants. Everything said in this talk was doctrinally correct. Those who took offense remind me of the scripture in the Book of Mormon that talks about how the guilty taketh the truth to be hard.

So when you condemn someone else then you are condemned because that was what Satan was cast out of heaven for. Was condemning everyone and saying they should not have free agency. Jesus said no I will go with Heavenly father's plan that they can choose. And a lot of the things people think that they condemn other people for our things that they are actually themselves doing. Joseph Smith, in his translation of Matthew, gives better insight to this passage. It reads, "Judge not unrighteously, that ye be not judged; but judge righteous judgment."

This fits well with the symbolism portrayed in the next couple of verses where we must "first cast out the beam that is in [our] own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye."

So it's not a matter of never judging any actions that people commit just arbitrarily, it's about making good judgements that align with the doctrine of Christ.

We are to judge PEOPLE. However, we can, and must, judge actions. We must decide whether an action is good or evil so that we know if that is an action we should make. All we are commanded to not do is judge a person who makes bad choices as “evil.” Only God makes the final judgement as to that person. We are just to love people.

Joseph Smith once publicly rebuked Brigham Young so severely and publicly that it caused quite a scene and a crowd. Brigham Young responded with humility and asked what he should do differently. Joseph Smith said to do nothing as it was only a test. And in contrast the angry responses to this talk only show those very people who they actually are. True humility is in short supply these days and I fear we are all about to be taught a soar Abrahamic lesson because of it.

I do not believe in “One true” anything. A persons relationship with God is as individual as each of our fingerprints. No two are alike. I have studied the bible, the making of the bible, the choosing of the books of the bible, the omitting of others. I have studied bible interpretations throughout the years and how one single word translated incorrectly, changes a message of oral history that was passed down until it was written down and shared. Cardon, my own faith is strong, because I studied the bible in the secular world and used my own mind, my critical thinking skills and relationship with God and one thing I do know is that we are not here to judge anyone. We are here to love the perfectly imperfect. Remember God never makes a mistake. You can feign neutrality all you want, but declaring an entire faith as one based on fear and saying that it considers people to be "trashbaskets" (as you said, implying that's what was said in this devotional), does not give you the higher ground, no matter how much you say you "respect" individual belief.

I am not a member of LDS, and I do apologize if to you, as a member, my opinion came across as a misinterpretation. In the temple, members are not distinguish by rank, only by individuals and gender, and members all wear the same color of clothing there, but both make the same promises with God. As this fellow said, no matter how crumpled up the bill is, it still has value, and that we should look at people the same way, as always having value. Does that mean there are things that will hurt us? Probably, and discernment and judgement help us determine what is good and what is not good, i.e. a dictator vs. someone like Mother Teresa. Knowing that doesn't mean we judge the individual.

God loves everyone but he does not want us to sin. Think of it this way as a parent….we love our children no matter what but when they misbehave, we help them correct it so they will not continue doing it. I don’t see how any parent would not agree with this. God has set commandments & order in place just like we do as parents for our children. It’s because we want them to learn & grow in order to navigate in the world when they’re able to be on their own. God wants the same for us. We know that if we love God, we have the desire to trust his ways, follow him & keep his commandments.
I did not hear anything in his talk stating to shun, hate or persecute anyone. It was simply about not letting the adversary into our lives teaching us any other way to believe & live that isn’t in accordance with Christ’s teachings.

@DesertKitsune I did not see his talk as hateful, but very judgmental. It was one of the reasons why I left evangelical Christian churches in the past. I always felt overly judged, stigmatized, and I was never good enough. They were also high demand churches that required a lot energy and time, in exchange for a lot of hurt and pain. I always go back to John 8 with Jesus and the adulteress. That was an example love and immediate forgiveness and love of Christ.

@J & D Robinson As Church leaders have taught, the Church is the scaffolding with which eternal families are built. Eternal life or exaltation is only possible with a man and woman. That same eternal pattern after our Heavenly Father and Mother was first established with Adam and Eve. This is never going to change and it's why homosexual relationships have no part in the Plan of Salvation. They are a literal dead end in the eternal sense. Those members who don't support the doctrine of the family, which is the very essence of the Gospel, usually end up apostatizing sooner or later. Same-sex attraction or gender disphoria are products of the Fall and will be remedied in the resurrection. Those members who struggle with these things have the same promises as long as they obey the commandments and keep their covenants.

@Kimball E Satan is a fictional character that was developed during Second Temple Judaism. Religions that use Satan (or their particular deity's nemesis) to scare parishioners into compliance/obedience are exerting undue influence. Outside of religion, this would be considered abuse.

This particular speaker not only milked "The Destroyer" for all he could, he did it with theatrics and gusto. His delivery simply added to the anxiety that believers in that audience already had. Many BYU-H students walked out in the middle of this speech, and many BYU-H students are talking about how triggering this talk was for them.

It’s terrifying to me that people actually believe that they’re speaking the truth. Like how is this acceptable? I don’t understand how judging people is “righteous” and how excluding people (specifically lgbt people) from the “love of God” because they can’t have children is allowed when God loves everyone. Why not change the old rules and include lgbt families in the family proclamation? There are plenty of children who could be adopted or fostered. Instead of continuing to focus on a positive such as the $100 bill analogy, he chose to attack a group by singling them out with that snide tone, negativity, and religiously worthless politispeak catch words, namely progressive and liberal. He could have and should have talked about figuring out one's own self worth and seeing the worth in others. Instead he spent the final part of his talk to attack a group that the church is trying to reconcile with. How do he and the church leaders and those who defend him think that this attack is going help in that reconciliation? The incidence of suicide in the church is already bad enough. Learn to engage others with kindness and not spew useless words that only serve to incite the same divisiveness and contention that Hatch just talked about. Oh the irony!
I find it sad that for two weekends out of the year the church preaches compassion and kindness and during every other moment of the year, they completely ignore what was said during those two weekends.

Some members of this church particularly members of my former ward were so easily triggered by my mere presence on Sunday and my desire to go to the temple that they saw fit to start harassing me. They did not forgive me for daring to exist in their presence, in their ward.
Some members are so triggered by non-members moving in to their neighborhoods that they will not let their children play with the non-member children. They did not forgive the non-member neighbors for moving into "their" neighborhoods and schools.
I can go on. The church "teaches" a lot of things. Kindness was a topic a week ago but Hatch missed that obviously. The point is - is anyone actually listening?? Actions speak louder than words. So right back at you.

The speaker directly shares principles that members already consider truth while intermittently harming other members. How? He hurt individuals who are searching for answers to questions about self-worth while proclaiming that self-worth is already determined by divine identity.

I believe his intent in showcasing his/his guest's musical ability is to "walk the walk" in rejecting other people's views and living authentically to one's life. But he mocked individuals who have been searching for this confidence outside of church-prescribed methods of prayer to God and prophetic acceptance. He did so when he insensitively characterized the notion he termed "your truth." Christ's truth and one's understanding of truth are not mutually exclusive. This speaker implied that a personal search for truth (dare I say your journey of personal revelation) is a wicked rejection of the restored gospel.

What if his message centered on how GOD listens to your questions and searches for self-worth instead of giving distracting statements about how horrible the adversary is by describing his "progressive" tactics as drawing people to "liberal Jesus" or what's "socially relevant."

All in all, I'm disappointed.

Everything he said is correct. You'll notice that only those who don't have a testimony of the doctrine of the family - which means they don't have a testimony at all - have taken offense. "The guilty taketh the truth to be hard..." The Gospel is concerned with actual, eternal truth. Not false, selective "my truth" that is championed by so many who would prefer a god in their image.

I listened to Brother Hatch’s entire message. It is a familiar oratory formula--love & fear + truth & conspiracy. Hear me out: words of love/affirmation/divine worth draw you in, building trust. Topics of spiritual danger make you feel vulnerable, activate the nervous system, and set you up for buy-in. The presence of some universally accepted truths placates critical thinking and projects credibility. Finally, passing off unprovable narratives as fact with such velocity separates you from reason, hijacks your sense of curiosity, and makes you feel like you belong to a privileged, elite group in possession of exclusive truth. Exposure to this proven, tightly woven messaging erodes self-trust and authenticity, convinces you to reject your inner voice, and allows the institution to ask you to devote the only life you get to them. I don't know if believers can see it but it is absolutely the ugliest part of mormonism.

@Jaime I understand. And, to your credit, most people that leave mormonism do feel destabilized for a while. But slowly--leaving behind the religious mythology--I learned to follow my curiosity, self-regulate, trust myself, and set boundaries. I am now a moral person of good character, rooted in values I chose independently for reasons that stand up to scrutiny. In short, I am a better human being to others now that I am governed by a moral landscape that I worked to shape. There is a DEEPER freedom in this form of accountability and self-governance and I could not recommend it more.
