Tears Before Bedtime
Delphic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you will fall in line
When you will fall in line
When you will fall in line
When you will fall in line
When you will fall in line

Taking by the night
And sail away the stars
Fallen through the night

Sail away the stars.

Overall Meaning

The repeated phrase of "When you will fall in line" throughout Delphic's song Tears Before Bedtime could be interpreted as a commentary on conformity and society's pressures to fit in. The emphasis placed on the word "will" implies a future action that the subject is expected to take. The verses that follow with imagery of sailing away and falling through the night suggest a desire to escape these pressures and find freedom. The chorus then serves as a reminder that despite this desire, the subject must fall in line at some point and conform to societal norms.

The use of "sail away the stars" also adds a dreamlike quality to the lyrics, hinting at a longing for something greater beyond the mundane world of conformity. It's a reminder that there is a vast and limitless universe beyond what we see in our everyday lives, and perhaps the subject is yearning to explore it. Ultimately, the lyrics convey a struggle between the desire for freedom and individuality, and the need to conform in order to belong.

Give it time the first time I listened to the album I thought shit they've lost it but sure enough it's grown on me and now I'm loving it sweet

Ken Warren

It's definitely in my top 20 albums of 2013

Sleepdriver

Totally agree, together with Suede's reunion album, it's my candidate to Album of the Year so far

Sleepdriver

I agree this is the best one on there, but this second album is constantly growing on me, so different from the debut, it kinda reminds me of the last two albums by Talk Talk, in the same spirit of radical change in song structures and melodies :)

Christof Migone

For those who may be curious the (authorized) vocal sample on this track comes from my 1996 album Hole in the Head, tracks 28 and 29.

Ellen Judson

Do you know where I can get a transcript of what she's saying?
