Her playing attracted the attention of bass player Ray Brown, who brought her into touch with influential teachers and producers. At the age of seventeen, she won a scholarship from the Vancouver Jazz Festival to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. After three terms she moved to Los Angeles to study with Jimmy Rowles, with whom she also began to sing. In 1990, Krall relocated to New York. She is married to British musician Elvis Costello.

Tired and lonely,
Crying for home in vain,
Just like a butterfly that's caught in the rain!
Longing for flowers,
Dreaming of hours
Back in the sun-kissed lane,
I know that all of the world is cheery
By that old cottage door,
Why are my wings so weary?
I can't fly any more!
Here I am praying,
Brokenly saying,
"Give me the sun again!",
Just like a butterfly that's caught in the rain!
When it's raining from the sky,
And I see a butterfly,
I can almost hear him sighing
'Cause he has to stop his flying.
I can easily sympathise
With those helpless butterflies!
Here I am, lonely,
Tired and lonely,
Crying for home in vain,
Just like a butterfly that's caught in the rain!
Longing for flowers,
Dreaming of hours
Back in the sun-kissed lane,
Just like a butterfly that's caught in the rain!
I know that all of the world is cheery
By that old cottage door,
Why are my wings so weary?
I can't fly any more!
Here I am praying,
Brokenly saying,
"Give me the sun again!",
Just like a butterfly that's caught in the rain!
The lyrics to Diana Krall's song "Just Like A Butterfly That's Caught In The Rain" depict a sense of loneliness and longing, as the singer compares herself to a butterfly trapped in the rain. The lyrics convey a sense of helplessness and despair, as she yearns to return to her home and to the sun-kissed lane she once knew. The imagery of the butterfly is particularly poignant, as it symbolizes transformation, fragility, beauty and grace, qualities which the singer seems to embody.
The song's poetic lyrics paint a vivid picture of a person who feels trapped and out of place, a stranger in a world that seems to have turned against her. She prays for the return of the sunshine and for the chance to spread her wings again. Through the use of metaphor and symbolism, the song expresses universal themes of hope, despair, and the search for meaning in life.
Overall, the song is a testament to the enduring power of music to touch the human soul and to offer comfort and solace in times of need.

Don't go changing, trying to please me
You never let me down before
I don't imagine you're too familiar
And I don't see you anymore
I would not leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
I took the good times, I'll take the bad times
I'll take you just the way you are
Don't go trying some new fashion
Don't change the color of your hair
You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care
I don't want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are
I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
Oh, what will it take till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you
I said I love you and that's forever
And this I promise from the heart
I could not love you any better
I love you just the way you are
I don't want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are
