Dick Haymes (September 13, 1918 – March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular American male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.
He never became a United States citizen and avoided military service during World War II by asserting his non-belligerent status as a citizen of Argentina, which was neutral. Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.
Haymes was married six times and had six children. His most famous marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949) and Rita Hayworth (1953-1955). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin
He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 61.

When you are all alone
Maybe the one who is waiting for you will prove untrue
Then what will you do
Maybe you'll sit and sigh
Wishing that I were near, then
Maybe you'll ask me to come back again
And maybe I'll say maybe
May be you'll think of me
When you are all alone
Maybe the one who is waiting for you will prove untrue
Then what will you do
Maybe you'll sit and sigh
Wishing that I were near, then
Maybe you'll ask me to come back again
And maybe I'll say maybe
The lyrics to "Maybe" by Dick Haymes express the singer's hope that the person they are addressing will remember them when they are feeling lonely and unsure in their new relationship. The singer suggests that perhaps the new partner they are waiting for will turn out to be unfaithful, and that they will regret leaving the singer. The word "maybe" is repeated throughout the song, as the singer is unsure of what the future holds for their relationship.
The lyrics convey a sense of melancholy and longing, as the singer is hoping to be remembered by the person they love, but also afraid of being rejected again. The song seems to capture a feeling of uncertainty about love and relationships, and the fear of being alone. Despite the uncertainty, the singer still feels a glimmer of hope that they may be reunited with their loved one in the future.
Overall, "Maybe" is a poignant and emotionally charged song that expresses the bittersweet feeling of love and loss. It highlights the power of memory and the hope that comes with the possibility of reconciliation.
